Manga goes hollywood

With Akira and Dragonball on the way from hollywood, it won't be long before we see live action adaptations of different animes/mangas. Which will result in projects such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Battle Angel Alita coming out of standstill. The results will vary of course as with the adaptations of different american comics, but it does raise the question: What should be made next?

While I would love to see a Full Metal Alchemist movie, as well as a Rurouni Kenshin movie, I think that Cowboy Beebop would make the transistion to live action the best from those choices.

Though I'm still excited about the Akira movies coming next year.

Which manga would I like to see as a live action movie? Many, among which Claymore, Uchuu no Kishi Tekkaman Blade, Mospedia, City Hunter, Souten no Ken, etc.

Which manga would I like to see as a live action Hollywood movie? Zero, nothing, nada, zilch! All Hollywood succeeds at is raping the spirit of a manga to its core and turning it into a generic action/SF/humorous movie. This trend of manga-inspired Hollywood flicks really needs to stop. :redface2:

The only decent to very good movie adaptations of manga or anime series I've seen so far were all made in Japan: Death Note, Tetsujin nr 28, Devilman, etc.

Devilman live-action was horrible, seriously. Could've been so much better too.

A few movies every now and then doesn't really constitute a trend, does it?

I'm actually hopeful for the Akira movies because, even though Leonardo Decaprio is behind them, they're going to be sticking closer to the manga, which I thought was ten times better than the anime movie, which I personally thing is overrated.

That's a tough line up to choose from. I'm going with Trigun. Not because it's necessarily the "Best" pick of the list but because it could quite possibly be the easiest to adapt succesfully.

Trigun is a simple Western setting with sci-fi overtones sprinkled along. If it's one thing US writers can get down to a science, it's western and sci-fi. With humor and very simple, easy to adapt characters, and a very human story-line, I think Trigun would be the better choice for adaption.

It would also be easier to make accessable to a wide market. Vash is a good character who you end up cheering for and laughing with. And the story tackles some basic morality issues with taking or saving lives.

The same goes for Cowboy Bebop honestly.

Battle Angel is actually in development now. James Cameron was mainly waiting for special effects to get to the point where he could do it justice. It's been his pet project since T2.

Ah, hope, how refreshing.

Just because it is a hollywood adaptation doesn't mean its going to be bad. Let us not forget Spiderman (1 &2), 300, and Batman Begins.

My vision: The team behind Memoirs of a Geisha doing Kenshin. I think that would be so visually stunning I'd have to claw my eyes out.
