It's true that you get more backstory for the characters that crossed over to Otome in the original, but most of them were either relatively minor characters in Otome or completely different from the original. For me, it was just as enjoyable to see the alternate versions in HiME, especially for characters like Natsuki, Shizuru, Mai and Mikoto, for whom HiME worked like prequel, in that it explained their origins. Granted, they're not in continuity with each other, but the Otome versions are basically a loose continuations (at least in spirit) of the originals in those cases.
