Yeah, Nina's feelings are more excusable because they began developing when she first met him (despite that she was a kid at the time) and because they're not biologically related. Amnesiac Sergey doesn't even remember meeting her or being her adoptive father for the past 6 (or so I estimate) years.

I would've watched Mai-Hime first, but the reason I checked out Mai-Otome in the first place was because the main character Arika is voiced by Kikuchi Mika (DekaPink/Umeko).

I picked it cause I found a nicely seeded full series torrent, and I've been too strapped for cash to check out My-HiME :laugh:
But there really are differences, many in the first episode and opening. For example, in the opening, you see Mashiro, but she's in a wheelchair. And Shiho was an annoying bitch in Mai-Otome, but in the first episode of My-HiME, she's shown as being ditzy and more of a sweet girl. Plus, Shiho's friend, Yuuichi, bears a close resemblance to Sergey.
Trust me, you'd be surprised how many faces you'll recognize just watching the opening video :laugh:

It's weird, but we're all envious of the cat Mikoto, who has the same penchant for snuggling with a pair of breasts as her namesake.
Since my previous post in this thread, I've watched Mai-HiME (and its specials) and a lot of the differences between the two versions of the characters are surprising, but interesting. While I did miss a few references to HiME when I originally watched Otome, watching them in reverse had the same impact, as you're seeing characters you're fond of (or not so fond of) from the first series you saw with altered personalities and in different situations.

Mai-Otome was really enjoyable for me, and I look forward to the OVA. My only problem is based on what Morose Angel said about seeing the characters again in the two shows. Mai-Otome expects you to have watched HiME. If you haven't, alot of characters have behaviors that aren't ever explained because they derive from their HiME incarnations. Like Shiho's vengful tendancies, Mai's mannerisms, or Mikoto in general. I kind of wish Otome was more detached from the original show.
But maybe that's just me.
