#01 – Unmei no Kakusei (Awakening of Destiny)
15 years ago, creatures called youkai were found to be terrorizing humanity in the dark. 4 guardian tribes exist in exorcising these demons sealing them within a gateway they call The Nexus. Only by performing all 4 of the holy rituals from the 4 different tribes can The Nexus’ gateway be completely sealed. However, the 4 purifier tribes exist without the knowledge of average humans and thus, they were never acknowledged.
The year now is 2009 and for over 15 years, average humans were living a life without the disturbances of the youkai but this was about to change when humans begins to go missing mysteriously. Interested in the current disappearances, Kazuki Naruse, a student in biological science in Kyoto University began his misadventures in investigations. He went on an interview spree on the presumed victims’ family friends and found one interesting similarity, most of them made a wish in front of their mirrors when they were last seen. This brought Kazuki to investigate further and bumps into a nosy female journalist, Himiko. She was also interested in the same agenda and decided to tag along Kazuki as Kazuki revealed to her interesting items that she did not discover on her own, including suspicion on other worldly beings that might exist in another realm.
When more disappearances are again reported, Kazuki and Himiko head off to where the cases happened but did not notice any irregularities. However, Kazuki noticed that broken mirror shards on the floor and this strengthened his perceived theory. When they were headed back to Himiko’s press, the JNT (Japan News Today), they were suddenly attacked by an unknown creature. The creature looked like a ‘shinigami’ with one arm holding a scythe and another holding a broken mirror began to assault Kazuki while not paying much attention to Himiko, giving her the chance to escape and call for help. With Kazuki’s struggling efforts being futile, he was knocked unconscious by the creature. When he was about to be executed, a strange flame brought protected Kazuki and brought him away to a nearby beach.
When Kazuki regained his consciousness, he is surprised that is still alive and without any scratches and dents on his body. Puzzled, he returned to JNT to look for Himiko but her colleagues said that she had not returned yet. Kazuki ran off in a hurry with a bad predicament in his mind and an uneasy feeling in his heart that Himiko might be in danger. He traced back the route that he was taking with Himiko from the scene back to the JNT press but found nothing. However, after closer examinations on the scene where he was attacked, he could suddenly see strange language written on the ground. Kazuki was surprised he could decipher the meaning the words as “Follow my trail if you want the girl back aliveâ€. He noticed that there are strange dark prints on the floor where he suspects only he himself could see it but not others. He follows the tracks in hopes of rescuing Himiko from danger.
At the end of the trail, he was face to face with the strange ‘shinigami’ creature again but this time, he was holding a perfect mirror. Himiko is seen unconscious within the mirror and the creature shows him body language that if he wants ‘her’ back, Kazuki must fight the creature. As expected, Kazuki was beaten and wounded but the wounded Kazuki was still persistent in fighting and rescuing Himiko. When the creature was about to deal the last blow to Kazuki, the strange flame appeared again but this time, it brought Kazuki to ‘its’ realm and spoke to Kazuki.
The red globe introduces himself to Kazuki as the ‘Soul of Suzaku, guardian spirit of the South’. The Soul of Suzaku tells Kazuki that the creature in front of him is not one that average humans could handle. However, Kazuki is told that he is the chosen one that could seal creatures like these back to where they belong. These creatures are called ‘youkai’ and only a chosen purifier can exorcise them, according to the Soul. The Soul added that ‘youkais’ exist in different forms and often conceal themselves in everyday objects, such as mirrors and others. As he displayed limitless courage, the attribute of Suzaku in the past, he passed the test to inherit the Soul of Suzaku. Although clueless about what is all about, Kazuki agrees to it as he thinks that this will eventually save him and his new friend, Himiko. With Kazuki ready, the Soul of Suzaku bonded with Kazuki’s body in the ‘Flame Realm’ and a huge explosion occurred in the real world sending the ‘youkai’ flying before it could deal the last hit. When the flames around Kazuki weakened, a reddish figure in gold clad armor can be seen standing there. Kazuki, not knowing what has happened is amazed by his new body. The Soul speaks to Kazuki again telling him ways he can utilize Suzaku’s power. Without bordering to listen, Kazuki charges in with a kick towards the ‘youkai’ and sent it flying. As he tries to continue to charge, the ‘youkai’ separated himself into two and one of them dwelled into the mirror where Himiko was hiding. Kazuki with Suzaku’s power gives the ‘youkai’ a punch which seemingly took it down. However, the Soul told Kazuki that he should not have been rash but listened to its advice. It added that the ‘youkai’ is not destroyed but what was destroyed is merely a clone the ‘youkai’ made from itself. Regretting on his actions, Kazuki begged the Soul to teach him a way to save Himiko. The Soul told Kazuki that he needs to take the mirror back to examine before knowing what the next move would be.
As he was taking the mirror away, Kazuki bumped on a passerby and dropped the mirror breaking it. With greater regret, Kazuki blames himself of his incompetence but the Soul told him that even if the mirror is broken, all is not lost. It added that all will be revealed after the Soul and Kazuki examine the mirror thoroughly. So, Kazuki continued his way back home with the broken mirror and………..

Learning that the ‘youkai’ is actually in a realm of its own in the mirror, the Suzaku Soul taught Kazuki of an ancient method that the Suzaku tribe once used to penetrate ‘youkai’ realms. With Kazuki failing attempt upon attempt, the Suzaku Soul feels that there might be an alternative method available.
