Internet problems/Streaming and downloading

For the last month and a half, I've been having weird and annoying problems with my internet in my house. The main problem is watching streaming videos on sites like youtube, veoh and hulu. I would start the video and it would not load a quarter of the video or half the video and then would stop loading. Sometimes the loading would just freeze and you would have to refresh the page and the problem would still continue.

Another problem is that I can't download any big files like episodes or songs without the download not freezing(although I can still download torrents). When the problem first started I couldn't even download word documents without it freezing. Another problem that use to happen although it doesn't happen anymore is that my internet would just randomly cut off for 5-10 minutes at least once or twice a day.

I have frequently called my internet provider about the problem and at first they thought that the problem was that my internet was too slow and I needed to upgrade to a faster connection. But this month, they temporarily sped up my internet and the problem in still there for the computers in my house. One person I talked to even suggested that maybe I need to replace my modem(which kinda makes sense since it's 3-4 years old and the internet would work again after you reset it).

I know its not a virus because I brought it to school and my friends house and my use of internet is normal with no problems. What do you guys think?

One would normally think that in order to be able to give a "useful/helpful" response, it would be helpful to know a few things such as:
- the technical specs/age of your comp (i.e. hardware, how much RAM/hard drive space you are using/have available, whether or not you have a router, etc.),
- where you are located (geographically-speaking),
- the type of internet connection you have,
- whether or not you've had issues like this in the past,
etc.

running a speedtest would also help, I personally recomened speedtest.net, also make note of your ping, Try using a different browser if not already, are you connecting wired or wirelessly?

if nothing else, factory resset the router kick it back to default and try again. And you said you use torrents, make sure no torrents/filesharing/or anti-anti piracy tools are running.

They're two computers in my house. One is a desktop and that 6 years old and the other is a laptop which only 6 months old. This issue has only come up in the past month and and a half. Before that, everything was fine. I have a cable internet with a wireless router for my laptop and wii which is a year old but the modem itself is 3-4 years old. Both computers have over 65% of space left and both have over 2gb of memory.

I got an A grade on the ping test and my average is a little lower than the isp average but not a big gap.

maybe best to call the ISP btw I used to be one of those guys at the end of the phone for broadband problems (Orange Broadband Fault Management/Wireless and Talk Technical Support), my synapsis on this is router problem from what I can tell but your still not giving enough information out, my second guess to the issues is a throughput issue, now I only ever came across one of them once and it tooks months to resolve but this was adsl.

what I mean by not giving enough info is, you skimmed through JFC's questions, and baiscly what we have learned from your response is, your on cable, you have 2 pc's with enough hdd and ram, but you havnt said if there both connected via wireless or one wired. location also helps If there both wireless try hooking one up wired, there is a billion things which could be causing problems on the wireless best one I heard was a neighbours TV causing disconections when they turned it on. And grade A? thats not a number, give us things we can use to help ya bud :)

Sorry I misread my results from pingtest.net: My line quality got an A grade. For ping, I got 35 ms, jitters was 3ms, 0% packet loss. As for speedtest.net, the ping was 68ms, download was 7.40 mb/s and upload was .96 mb/s.

As for specifics how the problem started, about a month and a half ago, internet went out in the entire neighborhood and my internet company spent the next two days working on it and when it came back, these problems started. My internet doesn't cut off at random anymore but if there is a power surge and the power goes out temporarily, I would have to reset my modem for it to work or it won't come back.

Also, my desktop is directly connected to my modem while my laptop uses a wireless router.
