Ichi The Killer - Talkback

Forever Knight

Eye See You
I got the DVD off my buddy who got it from his Japanese girlfriend and I plan on watching it on my break at work tonight. I was talking to Kyusaku on AIM and he says it's pretty good. I'm pretty sure the version I got is the uncut. But I'll let you guys know.

I was just wondering if any of you guys have seen this movie yet?.

I'll post my thoughts sometime tomorrow on it.

My DVD kept fucking up during most of the movie so I only really got to see about 45 minutes worth. But I will say this movie is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most FUCKED up **** I've ever seen.

I've seen Ichi about five or so times now. I know there's some obsessed fans who have seen it a whole bunch of times, but...upon my last viewing, I was like "Holy ****! What's it say about me that I've watched this movie so many times?"

It's a twisted piece of work, but none of it is supposed to be taken seriously, obviously. I don't know if the manga plays it that way, but nothing Miike does is supposed to be taken that seriously, which is one reason I like his movies (Dead or Alive is my favorite Miike film, though, which I recommend to those wanting a fun, over-the-top action flick).

Get a working copy (if you haven't already), Knight, because the movie just gets more and more fucked up.

Yeah that's basically what I told FK on AIM, that it's pretty twisted and don't really try to make sense out of it. And how Miike has become quite a name in the film industry these days with his eccentric films.

What I find funny, as far as Miike films go, is that people are most offended by Ichi the Killer, which I think of as being too cartoonish and over-the-top to really be that offensive or disgusting. But, those people are just fine with Visitor Q which is...the really screwier one, to say the least. Just the first ten minutes alone put to shame any of the outrageous antics seen in Ichi that were going for shock.

I think Kenichi Endou fingering a woman to death, screwing her corpse (as it releases feces onto him), getting stuck in her as rigor mortis sets in all while his wife is off milking herself is...well, far more twisted than a perv slicing up some nasty mafia guys and their molls. Thank goodness for Kenichi Endou, though, because he gives the character a (darkly) comedic bent that fits well into the Miike universe and I think Visitor Q would sink without him.

I think one of Ichi's problems (besides being damn near nonsensical) is that Nao Oomori doesn't really do much of anything interesting with the character. He's opposite the flamboyant Kakihara and is supposed to be the one dressed in a costume, the more psychotic -- Ichi himself could be a classic character in the Miike universe (as Kakihara's become), but Oomori's just bland.

Yeah I personally find Visitor Q much more screwier than Ichi. I didn't mention Visitor Q to FK because I figure it really wouldn't be his cup of tea. The family in Visitor Q is the dysfunctional family to end all dysfunctional families. Just the fact the story gives you a normal atmosphere, yet all the characters are absolutely abnormal really makes it twisted. Like it's suppose to be a typical family or something.

Yeah I can agree with you about that, whenever Ichi is referenced Kakihara is usually the character to stand out. Even though Oomori is technically the main character Kakihara seems to pretty much steal the spotlight as the antagonist.
