A ton of them came out last year in the wake of Mickey’s earliest form falling into public domain, but we suppose one took a bit longer to make. To make up for lost time I Heart Willie, from Hewes Pictures, won’t just be dumped to digital or DVD…it’ll be getting a theatrical run for one night across America. Here’s how Mickey is worked into this one: a hundred years ago in Mexico City, a boy was born with deformities that made him resemble a mouse. Cast out from society, the boy grew into a homicidal murderer who created a suit from the skins of his victims. But he can’t possibly still be around, right? Oh Another one of those Public domain horror. That Pooh movie really created a new genre and I am not loving it because they look tasteless and the acting is cringy.

I’m not expecting much from I Heart Willie, but I do appreciate that it doesn’t seem to rely on CGI. Practical effects almost always look better in horror, and if they go for a gritty, old-school slasher vibe, it could at least be fun to watch. The concept is silly, but I’d take a guy in a creepy homemade mouse suit over another CGI abomination any day. Honestly, this already looks better than Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, which was just a lazy, ugly mess. If nothing else, this might have some decent atmosphere and practical gore.

I’m so tired of this trend of corrupting public domain characters just for cheap shock value. It feels like every time a beloved character enters the public domain, someone rushes to turn it into a horror movie with little thought beyond “Wouldn’t it be creepy if?” It was mildly amusing at first, but now it’s just exhausting. These characters were created to bring joy, and now they’re being twisted into generic slasher villains for easy marketing.

It’s not even about being against horror—I love a good horror movie. But there’s a difference between a well-crafted, original story and just slapping a fay should focus on creating something fresh instead of relying on a familiar name to get attention. Just because a character enters the public domain doesn’t mean it has to be turned into a horror movie.

The concept of this movie actually has a tragic undertone. A boy born with deformities, shunned by society, turning into a monster—it’s classic horror, but it also speaks to how people who are different can be mistreated. If done right, I Heart Willie could have layers beyond just the kills. Of course, it depends on whether the filmmakers actually explore that theme or just use it for shock value.

Looks like absolute trash. I’m so tired of these lazy horror movies that take public domain characters and slap together some nonsense just to get attention. It’s the same formula every time—take a beloved childhood figure, distort it into something grotesque, throw in a weak backstory to justify the horror elements, and hope that people watch out of morbid curiosity.

The story here is ridiculous. A kid born with mouse-like deformities turns into a murderer and makes a suit out of his victims? That just sounds like a budget version of Leatherface with a Mickey Mouse gimmick. And let’s not pretend this is some passion project—it’s just another rushed attempt to cash in on a fading trend. The fact that they’re hyping it up as a “one-night-only” theatrical event is just a way to trick people into thinking it’s special when it’ll probably be on streaming a week later.

I already sat through Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, and that was one of the worst horror films I’ve ever seen. If this is anything like that, it’s going to be another cheap, embarrassing mess with bad acting and worse writing. I won’t waste my time.

Okay, but can we talk about how ripped Willie is? Like, I was expecting some creepy, disfigured monster, but instead, we got a full-on horror hunk. Mickey Mouse has never looked this good! The dude is jacked, and I’m not even mad about it. I know he’s supposed to be terrifying, but honestly, if this was the route they were going, they should have leaned into it even more.It’s kind of hilarious that out of all the public domain horror takes, this is the one where they decided to make the killer shredded.

Sounds like they’re just setting up more ridiculousness instead of focusing on making a solid film. I’ll pass.

Public domain can be great when used creatively, but so far, all we’ve seen is cheap, shock-value nonsense that exists just to generate headlines. Instead of celebrating classic characters by finding smart ways to reinterpret them, we get these bottom-of-the-barrel horror flicks that completely miss the point.

The fact that the DC Trinity—Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman—will enter the public domain in the 2030s already has me terrified of what these low-budget horror filmmakers will do. If we’re getting stuff like I Heart Willie and Blood and Honey now, imagine the absolute disasters we’ll see when studios can legally turn Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman into something else.
