Hurricanger's main flaw:too little focus on the Hurricanger themselves

After watching Hurricanger, I've felt that the series doesn't seem to focus that much on the main three heroes (Yousuke, Nanami and Kouta)
Hurricanger can be seen as a three part series:
-The first part is mostly about the Gouraigers, and their story: how they're the rivals of the Hurricanger, and why, and their relationship with the Jakanja, until they finally become heroes
- Second part: Shurikenger's introduction, and the rivalry Manmaruba/ Gouraigers
-Third part: Shurikenger's backstory with Gozen-sama, and the Sandaru arc and final arc.

The Hurricanger themselves seem to be supporting characters of their own series, getting mostly focus on filler episodes (except when Yousuke saves Ikkou in episode 32)
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Hurricanger ( I like the storyline, mechas, music, villains, and of course, the Gouraigers and Shurikenger) but I feel that because of the big number of main villains and the focus on the additional rangers, the Hurricanger themselves are pretty overshadowed, and I feel it's a flaw in Hurricanger.
Your thoughts?

I agree. I don't think there's anything wrong with the Hurricanegers being portrayed as not too bright and initially incompetent; the premise that the three worst ninja students are now the only people left to save the world was a good one, with potential to show a lot of development. There was some development for the Hurricanegers, and there were outstanding moments sometimes (like Yousuke saving Ikkou, as you mentioned) but in some ways I felt like the Hurricanegers changed very little. Yousuke was the impulsive Red type, Nanami was your typical token girl, and Kouta was supposed to be a little more serious and thoughtful than the other two - but they were all prone to reverting to type from the first couple of episodes where they were the blundering heroes suddenly thrust into the spotlight.

Most people seem to think Nanami was a better character than the other two but I think that has more to do with Nao Nagasawa's looks and less with the writing. Nanami's rivalry with Furabijou didn't do a lot for her character, as it was your stereotypical "bitchy girl rivalry" plot; and neither did her thoroughly boring romance with Isshu, which felt like Toei beating you over the head and screaming "LOOK! THEY'RE SO CUTE TOGETHER! HEY, YOU, AREN'T THEY CUTE?"

You are right about the Hurricanegers having little focus, but... I don't really see it as a bad thing.

I'm not fan of Hurri, but I do love most of series villains, especially Sandaaru, Furabijo and Satarakura. Series has a lot of flaws: Shurikenger himself is one big flaw, Gouraijer's story is kind of crude. It could be done in much better way. There are lots of other flaws. I heard that there was a new team of creators, starting with Hurri and looks like they were rather inexperienced back then. But I still think it's a not bad series.
