How do you keep players invested in long-running campaigns?

As a seasoned GM, I've noticed that keeping my players engaged in campaigns that stretch over multiple sessions can be tricky. I want them to feel invested in their characters and the world we're building together. What techniques or practices do you use to maintain that engagement? Any specific methods for weaving their backstories into the narrative or incorporating player feedback? Qapla'!

I totally get what you mean about keeping players engaged in long campaigns! One method that always works wonders for me is incorporating character backstories actively into the plot. For example, if a player has a tragic past with a certain faction, I'll make sure those NPCs pop up in unexpected ways, like a rival who returns for revenge or even a potential ally who's been through the same ordeal. It not only deepens the story but also makes players feel like their characters are truly connected to the world.

I also find it helpful to ask for player feedback after sessions. Sometimes, just a casual chat can reveal what they're excited about or if something isn't clicking. The more involved they feel in shaping the world, the more invested they become. Have you tried doing any of that? I'd love to hear about your strategies!
