Hey guys, Kamen Rider is just a kids show

Reason bieng that the old KR shows/movies had a very mature theme. For Example Shin Kamen rider had some really violent moments which can be seen right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6A_NtllQO0
kamen Rider Agito had some funny/silly moments but the main draw was it's interesting and serious storyline of exploring the human psyce and mixing it with some action.

Actually there are instances of toning down the DARKNESS during the Ishinomiri generations For example the first Kamen Rider had some of its darker elements toned down after Rider 2 came in, along with the introduction of the beloved Henshin pose. I agree that the time slot given for the first two generations does lean toward something were the kids would be watching it with the adults, but still had some elements interspersed. Then again this is based on Ishinimori's view of his series and his control. Hence we got some interesting stories and some dark moments (like the brutality scene with blood sprays and limb ripping in Amazon). But then we see things like the Jin Dogma monsters based on household objects in the second half of Super-1.

Ultimately movies will be more dramatic than TV, your point of KR Shin proves this. Still People were scared to hell by Daleks and Doctor Who is still a family show. Hell the Hartnell years tried to teach youngins science and history secretly during its episodes. THE SHOCK!

Well, Shin's an exception: it's pretty much the only legitimate tokusatsu aimed 110% for the adult fan. It was a V-Cinema celebrating the 20 year anniversary of Rider by offering up a darker take on the classic Rider story, targeted to the then-fully grown ones who grew up on the original.

But...

I didn't want to get into this once again (it's a topic that never dies, it just comes back, bigger and stupider than before -- like Jason Voorhees), but...

"Sesame Street." "Doraemon." Those are kids shows, through and through. There's nothing on a higher level for an older person there to enjoy. Superheroes can obviously have a broader appeal. I don't think Ultraman, Kamen Rider, sentai, or metal heroes deserve to be written off as just "kids stuff" -- that's the narrow thinking that writes off material like Batman and X-Men as just "dumb old kids stuff." That's the kind of thinking that numerous writers and talents in the field have struggled like sons of bitches to escape. And no matter how mainstream the genre gets or what it accomplishes, it still gets generalized.

Superheroes -- not to mention certain pieces science fiction -- are seen by a large group of the population as just lightweight or "stupid kids junk," but anybody who has made the attempt to gaze past mere labels can tell you that there can be more to the good ones. It undermines what talents like Stan Lee or Shotaro Ishinomori or Masaru Igami or Hirohisa Soda or Toshiki Inoue have accomplished. They want their tales to appeal to a mass audience, they often achieve it by telling unique stories that don't talk down or pander to one set...

...of course, to get their stories heard, they must partner up with some more shadowy folk. Some are good guys -- some are like Toru Hirayama, Takeyuki Suzuki, or Shigenori Takadera and are on the same wavelength with getting that story out with least amount of interference. Some are dubious, like Shin'ichirou Shirakura or Jun Hikasa, often blinded by greed, and pollute the product with stupid things to make it more commercial, knocking it down to the lowest common denominator just to make a sale...

Everything in the film and television medium comes down to merchandising, it just depends on how well it's handled. But you can't write off all superheroes oriented tales as just "kids stuff," just as you can't say that about animation.

well, there is a difrence between Sesame Street and Justice League here. Sure, both are esencialy kids shows, but one's aim is to educate, the other is to entertain. Same can be said about Kamen Rider, It's a kid show, but it's aim is to entertain, and just like Justice League, it aims to do so with smart stories and dark overtones. Since the rules of television is difrent in Japan to the US, they can get away with more then Justice League, thats why it seems more darker on a few aspects (mainly on the body count). But at the end of the day, weather it be Kamen Rider or JL, they have to shill SOMETHING, so they still have to bend over the will of Bandai or Mattel on stuff (more Bandai then Mattel, Mattel seems to have taken a hands off aproach to JL, just putting out figures of key heroes and thats about it.).

Howzit ALL,

Well, regardless if Kamen Rider is just a "kids show", I am so very thankful that I have not lost the "kid in me" and got to experience the Rider Kabuto!:buttrock:

Take care and henshin safely everyone!!!

They may have kids in mind for Kamen Rider, but they know they have an adult audience no matter what. Look at the merchandise that is for adults. Just like Sentai.

For it to be labeled as just a kids show isn't completely accurate. Especially when Toei/Bandai know adults are into it and have been into it for a very long time.

If it was simply a kids show, they wouldn't go through the trouble of making merchandise for adults or putting anything in the shows to appeal to older viewers.

I'm getting sick and tired of the whiners at RB complaining about the writing and toy gimmicks in Kamen Rider. Last time I checked the show was a sunday morning kids show and its #1 sponsor was Bandai, king of toy manufacturing.

Discuss.

Who gives a **** what the bitches at RB say, that's what I think. Besides, they're a power rangers discussion board. Not a toku board, so who cares what they say.

But yeah, it is a kids show. Everyone knows it. It can be a bit dark at times but it's a kids show and I still try to keep that in mind while watching. Thing is, the writers might know they have an adult audience and they might try to cator to a more mature show. However, they still have to sell toys. That's just how it goes. Every decision in that show is made because of Toy Sales. That's why you have Den-O featuring a train with a Puppy face that shoots nerf balls at enemies.

However, they still have to sell toys. That's just how it goes.

What TV show doesn't have merchandise? Just because they base most of their profit in the merchandise doesn't automatically make it a kids show. Look at LOST, Smallville, The American Gladiators, and BH 90210. Everything is based in merchandising. A lot of R rated movies have depended upon toy sales and merchandise! So I don't think the entire toy/merchandise argument works.
