December actually has two game award shows: the big one and the small one. The big one is, of course, The Game Awards with its big flashy stages and celebrity cameos and long trailers that take up over two-thirds of the show. Indie games get a few minutes in the spotlight there, but not that much. That’s why there’s the Indie Game Awards…an entire ceremony devoted JUST to the kind of games driven by pure passion over profit, by the honest efforts of hobbyists in garages. No AAA games allowed! Stay out of our club, Call of Duty! Not that indie games don’t get press though. You’ve likely heard of some of these games before, and you’ve definitely heard of this year’s winner, Balatro — the roguelike card game from Playstack that took the world by storm and had a real shot at Game of the Year at The Game Awards. It didn’t win there, but it did here. There are awards for Best Debut Game, which goes to the very first game released by any studio, and Solo Development, which goes to those without studios. Finally! An award show that gets it. None of that AAA fluff, just the indies we love to grind. Balatro winning is no surprise, that game's deckbuilding is insane. gotta check out Another Crab's Treasure and Animal Well, those underdog wins are what make these awards fun.
 
This list makes me so happy. Seeing Animal Well (solo dev here!) and Aggro Crab (community is everything!) win is inspiring. Cryptmaster looks super innovative too, gotta check that out.
 
Huh, never knew there were separate awards for indie games. Interesting! Mexico, 1921 sounds intriguing, love a good historical story. Maybe I'll give Balatro a try, everyone seems to be talking about it.
