Now, According to a seller these are Region 4 which means it's meant for European DVD Players UNLESS you own a region free DVD player.

It's going to be a long time before this set is released in North America, especially since the Buffy set was released this past November. I really don't feel like waiting for this set to be released in North America.

So how would I go about finding out if my DVD Player, Portable DVD Player, and Computer DVD Player are Region free so that I am able to play these?.

Here is the link to one of the ebay sellers and the specific info on the Region stuff for the set:

Region 4? That's weird because all of Europe, including the UK is region 2 (same as Japan) :sly:

Err Region 4 is Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean not Europe.

Regions:
Region 1: US and Canada
Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East (including Egypt)
Region 3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
Region 5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian Subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6: China

What I forgot mention. There are standard DVD players you can buy and hack. We own three DVD players (other then the DVD burners on our comps). Two were cheap, under $35 - I think one was actually $15 @ Target and the other was like $25 to $35 @ Walmart - and both were super easy to hack and become regionless. The third was expensive and part of the home theater - I have yet to hack that one. Point is, you don't need an expensive DVD player and it's typically the cheap ones that are easier to crack.

For the PC, I use a program called, DVD Region+CSS Free to watch the DVDs I buy from Japan and England.

Alright so to play the DVDs on my computer I'd have to download that program - Easy.

Now, how do I go about hacking my Portable DVD & Home DVD players to make 'em Region Free?.

I wonder why Japan is Region 2 and the rest of South East Asia (apart from North Korea and China) are all Region 3? Isn't Europe far away from Japan?

If you look at the list, Africa is split in half. The southern half is part of Region 2 while the northern half is Region 5. It could be the reason behind the weird split is politics.

Those region codes are not based on a geographical criteria but on time criteria, namely how long it takes for a movie to be put out on DVD. The US DVD's of a movie come out before any other area, hence they have their region code 1.
Japan and Europe usually get movies at about the same time frame, thus they have the same region code.

Basically, it's all about being able to cut up the market in segments (like console constructors) do, so that international sales won't get in the way of their marketing strategies.
