Halo Reach Multiplayer Beta

Since armor is going to be fully customizable, I am actually going to play this. There better be some sort of helmet with compound eyes, damn it!

I will be on around 1:30 today and around 7:00 pm tonight. Anyone who wants to play with me, send me an invite with a message that you know me from HJU. My Gamertag is Dark Ranger 99 exactly how it's written.

Well finally got a chance to play the Beta.

I only played the Arena Matchmaking, but there are already lots of thing I want to talk about. However, I don't want to create a big block of text wall so I'll just point out the most important ones. Some thoughts about:

1. ABILITIES
INVISIBILITY is probably the best of the lot, but should've been nerfed down a little bit. The period is really long, almost like 30 secs while moving, or around 45 secs while standing. The fact that your character still retains the invisibility even after getting hit is a bit weird, it should completely deplete the invisibility. And the Auto Radar Jammer is annoying to see in my HUD but I guess it's just for balancing purpose.

Armor Lock is quite interesting & can be overpowered if used correctly. For example, the Lock can be used to lure your enemy towards you then you can shot their face with shotgun or stick with plasma. Or you can wait until your allies comes in to ambush your enemy. The bad thing is, if you enemy is cunning enough, they can just wait & throw explosives at you when you run out of the Lock.

JetPack, not really a fan of it but it's really useful in SwordBase map to get to the higher levels quickly. Well the strategy is generally the same as what everyone said, ambush someone from behind with Jetpack. However, the biggest drawback is the slow startup of the Jet, which can -poop-s you up really if you're outnumbered or about to die. And some areas really have low ceilings that will make the JetPack useless.

Sprint, just like MW2 in theory but you don't have to hold the button to sprint. It can be good things & bad things, once you start sprinting you can only stop if you tap the button again or you humped onto wall or objects. While sprinting you're completely open to any -poop-s they throw at you.

2. UI
It's really nice UI, I'll give you that. But the opacity on some pages could've been better. I mean like some of the text & emblem page are actually too transparent it's kinda hard to read in small monitor. And also the character model sometimes sits behind the text, it really makes it even worse.
However, I really like the nearly smooth transition between each pages.

The HUD, man it's so horrible. I still prefer the Halo 3 version. The current HUD is so transparent, especially on the corner areas, I can't really see how many bullets I got left in my DMR. And there's no indicator on the weapon of how many bullets I have fired. In Halo 3, there's indicator of blank bullets to show how many bullets you have shot. Also sometimes if I pick up something, say Plasma Grenade, the indicator don't flash up unlike in Halo 3. So I really don't know if I picked up the Plasma or not.

3. MATCHMAKING
Well there are only 2 maps, Swordbase & Powerhouse. A bit too boring to play just in two maps unlike in Halo 3 Beta before. But so far my favourite map is the Powerhouse, it's bright, many-many weapons & but many hiding place in small map. The area really reminds me of High Ground.

There are more preferences on the matchmaking which I think is a really great thing. From most of my games, my connection bar is mostly 5 green bars, so I think Bungie really made improvement on the netcode.

VETO system needs more tweaking, the time is too short & some player don't even know that there is more options to veto (well according to my gameplay experience just now). Even the highlight is not really that stands out I had a hard time to see which option I vetoed.

WEAPONS needs a bit tweaking as well. I had a hard time to differentiate between AR & DMR because they're almost similar in shape. Frag Grenade is so overpowered, it can blast you from like 5 metres away. But at least it's better than Halo 3's frag grenade. There's a glitch with the Plasma Grenade itself that sometimes when you run over it, it won't get picked up. And also, yeah Viking is right, no more dual wielding. Great, now I can't be Chow Yun Fat anymore.

Just a bit annoying part is that the battle timer, which each battle lasts 12 minutes, starts IMMEDIATELY after the countdown stops on the black screen. In Reach the battle starts at 11:50 mark, which means we lost 10 secs on black screen & inventory selection. While in Halo 3, the battle last full 12 or 15 minutes and the timer starts when the players spawn in the map. This ought to be addressed in the final build.

Speaking of inventory selection, it's really pissed me off that you actually have to press A to select the choice you want rather than just highlight it & let the timer finish. It's getting even more annoying when you died & you want to change the ability, but you forgot to press A then you keep the last used ability. And the only way to change ability is to die. Some of my allies during my gameplay actually purposely die again so they can change the ability because they forgot to press A.

Also when you respawn, there's no immediately walk like in Halo 3. I mean that in Halo 3 when you respawn, if you hold the left stick on any direction your character will immediately move to that direction. But now in Reach, there is a slight pause, like 1/2 sec where your character just stand still, open to any incoming attacks then you're able to move. This should be addressed in the final build.

And this last one probably not really noticeable to all of you, but when you hold the gun, especially AR then you move around, the animation isn't smooth like in Halo 3. There like a missing frame on the AR animation when you move & the movement looks jaggy. Well I know it's still a Beta but I didn't remember that Halo 3 Beta had this kind of oddity before.

So yeah, just my thoughts about the Beta. Feel free to share your opinion as well.
