Based on the true story of Hachiko, a loyal akita dog that faithfully waited for his dead master from 1925 through 1935. Apparently Richard Gere starred and co-produced in the film because the Screenplay made him "cry like a baby." You might remember the Futurama episode that referenced this story with Fry's dog.
It came out on August 8th in Japan and is looking at a December 18th release for the US.
Yes it is an American movie, the Japanese trailer is just a bit better than the English one.
The cast is pretty star studded actually: Richard Gere, Joan Allen, Eric Avari, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Jason Alexander.
