Sure, Kouji isn't "professional" but he DOES come up with ingenious ways to beat the bad guys. Using Aphrodai A's missles to fly was ingenious. And he would train himself too, if he needed it to defeat the kikaiju. Remember how he practiced with boss and his gang, to perfect his technique of attaching a chain to the rocket punch to bring the flying beast down?

Still, I agree, in retrospect, that a "pro" like Tetsuya is much better than a spineless wimp like Kenichi Gou (apologies to Voltes fans out there)

Tetsuya may be cool enough to pilot the 'great'...

but only Kouji can pilot the Kaiser

what really sucks is that americans never got to see GREAT mazinger. we just saw Mazinger.

there were a few flash scenes of Great Mazinger and i remember as kids we were like WHOA that's a SUPER version of Tranzor Z!!! and we never saw it in any episode.

and in the original just what was Devileen?

But in the original Mazinger z series, they were more specific. Baron Ashura was created by Dr. Hell from the remains of an couple who were crushed to death. They were (according to the Philippine magazine Questor) Baron Ashfield and his wife Leraine.
