So the new Godzilla comic series came out yesterday, anyone else pick it up?
My thoughts
The good
[HIDE]-First off, I love the fact that we are getting a whole bunch of toho monsters this time. That alone will keep me buying these. Especially since the I got the fold out cover and the inside revealed who else is gonna show up. I won't spoil that, but I'm pretty stoked.
-Second, I love the fact that in the comics no one knows what Godzilla is. In both prior series, Godzilla was an already established force IIRC, but here he just shos up and everyone is just completely taken by surprise. That was very unexpected and I am excited to see what his origins are and how the world will react to the host of monsters to follow.
-Third, the fact that we get to see Godzilla kill and the devastation he's cause. It's something I feel that most of the movies kinda circumvent, but something I always seeing when it pops up. In first appearance alone we see him eat two kids.
-Which lead into my last thing I enjoyed. Prior to him eating said children, the boy is talking about how he wishes he had a pet monster. For those who haven't read the Marvel series a similar kind of relationship does actually develop between Godzilla and the child character and I can't help but think that writer's way of both referencing and poking fun at the Marvel series. On similar note, the final page of the comic is Godzilla in the ruins of the city, is very evocative of the cover of the first Darkhorse comic.[/HIDE]
The bad
[HIDE] -My biggest gripe with the comic is some of the dialogue, namely the three "Are you fucking kidding me"s. Personally, I felt that those ruined a lot of tension and horror of Godzilla's arrival. I can accept the first one from the fishermen, and I've even made peace with the one from Obama, but frankly the one from the Japanese Prime Minister was completely wrong.
The scene would have been much more powerful, if after they gave Godzilla his atomic ray, there were several panels of the Prime Minister being silent, then telling his attendants to start a city wide evacuation. They would response that there is no way to get everyone out in time, with the Prime Minister's saying something along the lines of "Yes, I know. We will save those we can and the rest..." which would have made the next two pages, which are Godzilla just devastating Tokyo, that much more powerful.
-Which is actually my second gripe. While the two pages of him destroying Tokyo was pretty cool, though a tad uncomfortable due to the recent events, I would have liked to see more of it. Not too much more but enough to just show have much far spread his rampage was (this may possibly be in the second one though, so I will have to wait and see).[/HIDE]
Things I'm on the fence about
[HIDE] The art- While I do feel it captures the spirit of Godzilla more so than Marvel's, but quite as much as Darkhorse's, something just seems kind off to me, like they are still experimenting with how the want to draw Godzilla. For instance in most the panels Godzilla just has white eyes, something which I love since I'm a HUGE GMK fan, but everyone once in a while they would give his pupils, which for this particular Godzilla, just looked wrong. IDK. I'll wait to see how the other's monster's are draw or if they get their act together on Godzilla before I make any final judgments.
The lack of human main characters- Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I heard that the humans characters would vary comic to comic and the monster's encounter them. While I do think this is very cool idea, especially since it was conceived to give the monster's more page time, I kinda want at least one character who the audience can identify with. Maybe a Steve Martin like reporter character. Once again I'll see how things play out before I make any final calls.[/HIDE]
Well that's about it. Sorry this is kinda rambling. Regardless of my opinions, I just super excited that the King is back in the world of comics.:buttrock:
