Gex Trilogy Announced For Consoles And PC

Back when every console seemingly NEEDED a mascot character to succeed, the 3DO was new on the market and needed something quick — the snarkier and tude-ier the better. Crystal Dynamics tooled around and came up with a gecko — Gex, whose original game premiered on the system….but didn’t remain exclusive for long as it was becoming clear the 3DO was a sinking ship. Playstation and Saturn versions of Gex would appear later. The gimmicks of Gex were numerous: being a gecko, he could cling to walls and even the backgrounds in some locations. He was a parody character addicted to television and the worlds he visited all mocked popular movie genres. But what people remember most is the voice, because it wouldn’t stop yapping. Comedian Dana Gould was hired to riff in front of a microphone, and his remarks became the “quips” that Gex repeated over and over. Gex survived the death of the 3DO and managed to weather the transition to 3D with two more sequels, in which it was established his profession was that of a secret agent. In the third game it was established he was dating a Baywatch actress, and the less said about that the better. Not everyone is a fan of Gex, but enough interest exists to make a rerelease possible after all these years. The Gex Trilogy will be published by Limited Run Games using their Carbon Engine to emulate the best version of each game. We’re told the visuals and controls will be given an upgrade (the camera really needs it). You also get trophy and achievement support, rewind and save state options, a new interview with Gould, a music player, and for the first time ever, Gex 2 and 3 in widescreen. I can’t believe we’re finally getting a Gex Trilogy remaster! I played these games to death as a kid, and the humor (as corny as it was) always cracked me up. The ability to climb walls and explore different movie-themed levels felt so unique at the time. I just hope they clean up the controls, especially in the 3D games. Gex 2 and 3 had great ideas but could feel a little clunky. Still, this is a day-one buy for me. Can't wait to hear Dana Gould’s quips all over again!

Limited Run Games? Physical copies? I’m in. I love seeing retro platformers getting new life, and Gex is such a weird, forgotten gem. I just hope they don’t make it too limited, because some of their releases sell out in minutes. Also, I wonder if they’ll include different voice tracks, like the UK version of Gex 3 with Danny John-Jules. That would be a cool bonus!

This is great news! The late ‘90s had so many good (and weird) 3D platformers, and Gex deserves another shot. It wasn’t perfect, but it had personality, which is more than I can say for some modern games. The TV and movie theme was ahead of its time, and the level variety was impressive. Hopefully, they don’t just upscale the visuals but also fine-tune the mechanics to make it smoother.

Okay, let’s be honest—Gex wasn’t the best platformer, but it had some of the funniest one-liners. Dana Gould going off about random pop culture nonsense made the game way more enjoyable than it had any right to be. I’m curious about that new interview with him. Hopefully, they let him improvise some new material. If they ever make a new Gex game, they better bring him back!

I wasn’t around when Gex was big, but I’ve seen clips, and it looks… interesting. The quips seem like they could get annoying fast, but the level themes are cool. I like that they’re adding widescreen support because playing old 3D games in their original resolution can be rough. I don’t know if this will be worth it compared to newer platformers, but I’ll wait for reviews.

It’s about time! Gex has been stuck in licensing limbo for years, and I was starting to think we’d never see a proper re-release. I just hope they really polish the camera and movement in the 3D games. Those controls were rough, even back then. But overall, this is a solid win for retro platformer fans. If it sells well, maybe we’ll finally see a proper Gex revival!

I just hope they don’t mess with the original dialogue too much. The humor is a huge part of what made Gex stand out, even if some of the references are outdated. If anything, I hope they add even more joke options so we’re not hearing the same five quips over and over. Either way, I’m down for another trip to the Media Dimension!

I never got why people liked Gex so much. The jokes weren’t that funny, the gameplay was average at best, and it felt like a worse version of better platformers. Maybe nostalgia makes people remember it better than it actually was. I’ll probably pass on this, but I’m happy for the fans who wanted it back.

I love that Gex is coming back, but I hate that it’s through Limited Run Games. Their physical copies are way too limited, and scalpers will snatch them up immediately. Hopefully, they print enough this time, or at least keep it available long enough for actual fans to get a copy.
