First Peek At Tomb Raider And Devil May Cry Anime

Two years ago Netflix announced they were producing more anime shows based around video games, after the success of their Castlevania cartoon. They signed deals with Capcom and Square Enix (at the time) to produce anime for Devil May Cry and Tomb Raider respectively. Today we got our first look at what both those shows will look like.

There's not much to the Devil May Cry anime trailer, just a few seconds of footage. It's series protagonist Dante grinning, jumping around and firing his guns. We can't glean much about the show from this, but presumably if it's accurate, it would be as over the top as the game series is (that's the hope anyway). Animation is being handled by Studio Mir, and Adi Shankar, who produced the Castlevania anime, is helming this one as well. Hideaki Itsuno, who's been involved with several DMC titles, is also lending a hand.

The Tomb Raider show is subtitled <em>The Legend of Lara Croft</em> and it takes place shortly after the most recent "Survivor Trilogy" set of games. That trilogy wrapped up a long time ago and we haven't seen a trace of a proper Lara video game since, though the next one is rumored to "bridge the gap" between Square's Mopey Lara and the original Fun Lara from the Playstation years. We just want Fun Lara back.

This isn't the only cinematic adaption for this IP in the works; Amazon is currently producing a live-action TR series directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and there may even be another movie after that. Despite what some uneducated people might have told you, Amazon does NOT own Tomb Raider now. They are serving as publishers for the next game. The actual rights to Tomb Raider are currently held by Embracer Group, though with that company in freefall, we don't know how much longer they will.

Both <em>Devil May Cry</em> and<em> Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft</em> will premiere on Netflix in 2024.

I'm really curious about the canon status of the Devil May Cry anime. It would be fantastic if it's connected to both the video games and the 2012 anime. As for the Tomb Raider anime, it certainly seems like it's part of the 2013 timeline, especially with that picture of Lara and her survivor gang from the reboot.

Guys I think really does seem like Square Enix is leaning towards making Survivor's Lara the definitive Lara in the franchise. The anime portrayal is clearly not the classic Lara Croft we remember. And I noticed that picture with Sam and Jonah, which strongly suggests it's rooted in the Survivor timeline from the 2013 reboot. Interesting direction they're taking! ??

The guy with the Devil May Cry trailer does not look like Dante. Dante never had hair that short. It looks like his nephew Nero. He really looks like Nero, but not his Devil May Cry 5 version. More like his Devil May Cry 4 version, but much older.

This is my theory regarding the Devil May Cry Netflix anime: it seems like a myth-quo, a blend of myth and status quo, if you will. The latest timeline we saw Dante in was Devil May Cry 5, where he appeared to have aged into his 40s. This guy in the anime is either a younger Dante or an older Nero. Devil May Cry's timeline has always been a bit convoluted.

As for the correct order of the Devil May Cry canon, it goes like this: first is Devil May Cry 3, followed by Devil May Cry 1, then Devil May Cry 4, followed by Devil May Cry 2, and then Devil May Cry 5. Additionally, the 2012 Devil May Cry anime was also considered canon and occurred before Devil May Cry 5. This new anime has me scratching my head, wondering if it's going to fit into the canon. I'm really hoping it does; Netflix could use more canon-based adaptations instead of that not-so-great Resident Evil series from years ago. ??

Hmmmm... I'm genuinely excited that the Tomb Raider anime seems to be set in the Survivor timeline! I've been so curious about what happened to Sam since the events on Yamatai. The last bit I heard was from a novel mentioning her struggling with PTSD. But after the sequels to the 2013 Tomb Raider, there's been no mention of her at all. I'm really eager to find out what's become of Sam after that traumatic experience nearly getting sacrificed to Himiko.

I can't believe we're finally getting a Devil May Cry anime! Dante's quick moves and guns blazing in that teaser have me hyped. Plus, knowing Adi Shankar is behind it, I'm expecting great things. Let's rock

Hey Travis, just wanted to mention that there was a Devil May Cry anime in 2012, and it's pretty cool. It even has a catchy theme song! What's interesting is that it fills in some gaps and shows what happened to Dante after Devil May Cry 2. Back then, before Devil May Cry 5 arrived, Devil May Cry 2 was the end point of the timeline. So, if you're a fan of the series, it's definitely worth checking out! ??

I'm quite disappointed and frankly, a bit livid too. I really miss the Classic Lara Croft, the one who exuded intelligence, confidence, and a dash of arrogance. She was a symbol of strength and sophistication, a true icon. Survivor Lara, on the other hand, comes off as inexperienced, and the way she handles things sometimes makes me scratch my head. The contrast is undeniable. I hope we get to see more of the Classic Lara in the future!
