I got back from seeing this a while ago, and I can say all the hype behind Dreamgirls is well founded. I seriously can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie so much. Jennifer Hudson dominated practically every scene she was in, acting or singing. So much so that I can see why there's so much buzz around her about getting the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Beyonce does a superb job portraying Deena Jones, the Diana Ross "role" complete with all the insecurities and questions that Diana had when she was singled out to be the star, but she didn't have quite as much stage prescence until the second half of the movie. It's downright eerie how much of a resemblance she has to Diana Ross in her younger years once she gets all dolled up.
But the best performance in Dreamgirls, IMO, came not from Jennifer or Beyonce, but from Eddie Murphy as Jimmy "Thunder" Early, who delivered a scorching rendition of "Steppin' To The Badside" in the first half of the film that puts his one-hit wonder song "My Girl(Wants To Party All the Time)" from the 80's to absolute shame. Great movie overall to check out if you haven't yet.
