Dreadfang

Thank you, Bigdog. That was actually one of the challenges I was presented with when preparing this story. I was confused as to how I was going to formulate a story around the Kiva footage and still make it original. An original plot that went through my head was to just copy the Kiva story, but I wanted to make things more unique. Eventually I settled on a basic concept of the main character being a writer, and it got started from there.

Funny story though. Another idea I had was to just take Kiva's appearance and put it in a whole new setting, taking advantage of the horror theme. I was going to have him spend 40+ episodes fighting legendary creatures and horror film villains. It got scrapped, but I haven't totally tossed it out yet... *hint hint wink wink*

This idea would have seen Dreadfang tackling challenges such as the Loch Ness Monster and the Jersey Devil, as well as fighting characters like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, all with an all-powerful main villain that was bringing them together. The new Goosebumps books were actually what made me not do this, because I didn't want to be accused of stealing ideas.

Like I said, I haven't totally forgotten it. We may see something involving that plot later, but I'm not sure yet.

The Film killers take it a bit too far ,but my idea of a Kiva adaptation early on would have been having Kiva absorbing four of the monsters he fights against in the first four episodes.

With great adaptations like RPM, most of the "corny" footage that was orginally in the series can be editted out in the sense of the talking dinos in Dino Thunder or given explanations like in RPM.

Check out my Bionicrangers fanfic, you'd like it. It's a reboot of the Power Rangers mixed with the popular Bionicle franchise. It might not be as action packed now, but I have great plans in store for it.

Anyways, if you want inspiration , look at my KAMEN RIDER fanfic:

I will definitely check it out when I get some free time. I could always use new inspiration. Just makes me happy to know that people are at least checking this thread. Lets me know I'm not wasting my time writing.

Also, in the next few days I should have an old Q&A I did a few months ago back up. A friend sat me down and asked me a bunch of questions regarding Dreadfang, and the interview sheds light on where the story came from, how it will develop, and discusses earlier ideas and possibilities for future seasons.

The Q&A may be updated to fit the present.

I mentioned a Q&A, but I'm still reviewing it to pick out some things that I don't want to be mentioned. It should be out soon. Meanwhile, Episode 15 should be completely finished today and released on Friday, and then I will begin work on Wave Two on Monday. In the meantime, here's a teaser question to tide you over. My next post will either to be announce the release of the next episode or the Q&A. Stay tuned.

[HIDE]Q: So what's on the agenda after Dreadfang? More seasons? New projects?
A: I still haven't fully decided. I'm currently working on a Shinkenger adaptation, but that will be released alongside Dreadfang, not afterwards. It's technically my next project.

As for more seasons of Dreadfang, it's not very likely. I love the story and everything about it, but there's only so much you can do with a certain set of characters for so long. If I did another season, I'd have to bring in new characters to take up the mantle, and I don't want to do that. Matt is and always will be Dreadfang, but there won't be much left to do after this first season.

If I did do another season, I'd pull a Power Rangers Zeo and change up the source footage. I'd need to take another Kamen Rider season and use it as the base for a new story, which would allow new elements to be explored. I'd most likely consider this if I were to continue, but like I said, it's not very likely. But what season would I use? I'd like to do something with either Hibiki, Kabuto, Faiz, or Den-O.

As for more projects, I'd probably do either another Sentai adaptation (I have a really neat idea for a Kakuranger story that I would like to explore) or I'd try once again to write a completely original story. I'll let you know when I decide what I'll be doing. I'm going through ideas right now.[/HIDE]

Episode 15 is out.

This marks the end of the fist wave (or Spring Wave, as I have dubbed it) of episodes. I'm kind of disappointed, because I meant to give more answers in this cliffhanger episode (there's only one and it's very vague) but it serves its purpose.

I begin working on the next wave, the Fall Wave, on Monday. This will consist of Episodes 16-30. New episodes will return on September 7th 2009. The link to the new episode website will be posted the week beforehand, in this thread and on both sites.

What will we see in the next wave? We'll learn the origins of Dreadfang (at the end of the run, sometime after Episode 25) and we'll establish Matt's character more. So far, he has no one there for him all the time. His allies come and go, even Isobel, and in this next wave we'll introduce someone who will serve as a full-time ally to him... or will she?

We'll also find out the answer to why Arthur despises Dreadfang so much, we'll learn more about Isobel's family, we'll be introduced to the final two warriors, and the two timelines will start to finally connect.

Wave Two will give us almost all the answers to all the plots that have been introduced, and will led into the final run of episodes that will inevitably wrap everything up.

Wave Two is coming along pretty well. If I told you that I just finished writing Episode 17 yesterday, you might be a little worried, but it still puts me a month ahead of releases, so as long as I continue writing, I'll be okay.

I've decided to post a scene from Episode 16 as a little teaser, seeing as episodes return in only a few weeks. It's in the box below, as it contains a major spoiler.

[HIDE]July 23rd 1986 – 4:13 PM – Chicago, Illinois – DreadHunters Base

Scott stands inside of a large metallic room, surrounded by people in tight blue uniforms. He is dressed in his usual attire, and holds the Huntsman belt in his right hand. He smiles, staring ahead at Nikki who is standing just a few feet away from him. She too is smiling.

A tall man with short, black hair approaches Scott, holding a small black box in his hands. He stops in front of Scott, blocking out the view of Nikki, but Scott continues to smile.

“Scott Thompson,” the man begins, “you have been briefed on our mission here at the DreadHunters, and informed of our rules, standards, and punishments. After your ordeal this week, and having been given time to think about what we have said to and offered you, will you accept the risks and rewards that will come with this job, no matter how great or how small they are?"

“Yes, sir.” Scott replies.

The man hands Scott the black box. “Then we are proud to call you the newest member of the DreadHunters. Welcome to the ranks. Please open the box and look at its contents.”

Scott does as he is told, setting the Huntsman belt down on a table nearby and opening up the box slowly. Inside sits a DreadHunters ID card, along with a folded blue uniform and a small silver pistol. Sitting on the side is a rule manual. “I am honored to be included in this team, sir. Thank you.”

New episodes return with Frankenstein Unchained on September 7th. More new episodes will follow on September 21st, running through January.

I've been super busy with work lately, so yes, I missed the release date for Episode 18. It will be released this Monday, and Episode 19 will be released either next Friday, or the Monday afterwards. Stay tuned for news.

Episode 19 was released last night, but the page updated really late. So I don't count it as a late release :P It's out.

20 coming next Monday.
