You DO know that japanese don't really have any swear words, right? There are "impolite" words, but not swear words as we know them.

In some cases, you can translate these words into "bastard" etc. depending on the mood in the scene, but sadly some fansubbers tend to overuse them, because they think it will make it look more "mature"
TVN were very bad at this in the past, but they have toned it down a bit in the recent years.

Ehh, swear words in English are mostly just coarse and vulgar terms themselves, and they DO have words that are considered unsuitable for broadcast.

But generally I think it's more important to translate with the audience in mind. If it's a kid's show, don't translate "yarou" as something that wouldn't be acceptable to a kid audience in English. You don't have to go all S&P on that ****, but just consider whether you want your 5-year-old nephew asking what "bastard" means before you slip it into that Gingaman script.

As far as hilariously inappropriate profanity goes, the one that always sticks in my mind is the old, bad Elite-Fansubs version of Hikaru no Go, that had Akira -- the soft-spoken, intelligent young Go prodigy -- shouting **** OFF (all caps) at the protagonist. Ahh, good times.

Sometimes I think subbers just translate the "informal" Japanese speech into English curses simply to make the show itself look cooler. Whether that's true or not, I couldn't say, but I highly doubt any of the words that get translated into curses really are that. Japanese, like other languages, has multiple words and tones for the same subject, depending on the context. English doesn't. "You" is "you" no matter what the intent.

Great, another Nipponophile.
