I know very few people might actually remember this gem of a gameshow being that it was UK only and in the late 80s but I would like to at least show this thing off, especially since I saw a pretty good review of it recently Here and here.
Remember back in the day, when the tales of monsters and magic, knights and rogues in Dungeons & Dragons was becoming popular.... and became swarmed in controversy by the media watchdogs?
This show was created around the same time, trying to recreate those elements of RPGs and text based adventure games into reality...using blue rooms, hand-drawn chroma key animation, and blindfolded (helmeted) adventurers with guides who had difficulty trying to discern left from right.
Suprisingly the show isn't as cheesy as it sounds. The actors, especially the host and dungeon master, Treguard, really knew their stuff considering they had to work on the fly with the contestants making unusual choices beyond the script. The tech wasn't half bad for the time; after all a computer graphic based gameshow in the 80s?! The people for ITV must have called the creator, Tim Child, crazy when he proposed it.
Ultimately the show was like a combination of Ninja Warrior and classic RPGs, replacing the stunts with mental prowess, and only few ever got to the end.
(Only 8 teams out of 8 seasons with more than 30 teams shown).
The reward, changing from Medallions to Statuesque trophies, wasn't great, but just beating it was a thing of glory itself for kids of the day.
Recently Tim Child has posted some cryptic news here that may be hope for a revival of some sort. With the technology available today, who knows what adventures may come for the next generation.
So any memories or thoughts?
EDIT: Found a semi-interactive single person recreation here. It requires Java, just so you know. Do you have what it takes?
