Did Gokaiger shoot itself in the foot...

I'm sure a lot of people would be PISSED if they brought back the actors, gave them their powers but then just gave them the Decade-Kuuga treatment

Yeah, it's supposed to be all about the Gokaigers now. The other 34 sentai teams had their time to shine.

?? It's an anniversary series. The other 34 teams are SUPPOSED to shine again. They're even MEETING everyone. Why meet them if they don't get to be awesome again? You could easily make another Gaoranger and call it a day.

I don't think they'd ever let any real returning character hang around during the entire series so that example doesn't really work.

Anyway, the actual guest Riders were never treated like Onodera, even Onodera himself when he was in an initial guest role.

I also suspect that part of Onodera's problem came exactly from the fact that he wasn't portrayed by the original actor. I got the impression that several writers, even Sho Aikawa himself, wanted to avoid using him as Kuuga directly in a recurring role and mostly used him as a supporting cast member of his own, without using the "Kuuga" aspect much outside of the Kuuga arc itself.

In the final few episodes with Yonemura as the main writer, he becomes more active as Kuuga, even getting some gestures and direct references to Godai's words in his speeches that didn't exist previously, but I guess that was far too late to most people and it also coincided with the two movies where everyone was basically required to lose at some point... which didn't help him look any better.

The show not only take away old Senshi powers, but also limit the guest stars' appearances. It's sort of good thing because gokaiger won't be overshadow by their sempais. The same formula got repetitive with every 2 episodes a random red senshi back for minute or less. The new powers unlock during those episodes are random too.

I am almost afraid to say this, but... this is actually a show where Decade's dimensional travel would have worked.
They have a pirate ship, and they are supposed to go out and find "treasures"
It would have made more sense for them to be sailing around in space, going from one Earth to another, meeting up with the teams from those worlds.

Having all the Sentai teams being from the same world is a bad idea, and it eliminates the chance of writing themed episodes for each past team.
I'd much rather have 35 different worlds, where the Zangyack has either destroyed the old villains or forced them to team up with them.

"But what about the legendary war?!" you say?
Well, that is pretty easy. The Sentai teams failed to save their own worlds. So they all teamed up and took off to one of the planets that Zangyack was about to invade.

I could care very little about seeing the old Sentai teams fight, as this show is about Gokaiger, not Magiranger, Dekaranger or whatever.
However, being an anniversary show, it WOULD have been fitting to see the Gokaigers fight in a Magi-themed world or a Deka-themed world, and see how each has been affected by the Zangyack invasions.
Imagine past grunts walking around with Zangyack armor etc. There is SO much they could have done to make this show more of an adventure instead of: “Let us float above the same city day after day, and wait for some guest stars to pop up”

I know, & I'm very happy about that. What I & musashi03 are trying to say is, is that the previous Sentai teams can't take too much of the spotlight off of the Gokaigers, so that's why the previous Sentai guests that we keep seeing aren't fighting alongside the Gokaigers.

I think Gokaiger is fine. They have the old characters back, but not at the expense of the new team. The older actors serve as mentors to the new team. Helping them to grow as a Sentai. I don't see any problems with the show so far. The only iffy episode was the geki ep.

I don't have any problems with the format, but to be honest I'd rather see the characters as wise mentors than the Gokaigers equals'. If they still had their powers then you'd have to explain why we don't see them in every episode and that'd get unwieldy pretty quick.

The Zangyack explanation for why nobody has their powers doesn't make a ton of sense, sure, I can accept that as a problem. Personally, I hope for some revelation that it's actually connected to the Ranger Keys on down the line. It's still a good status quo for an episodic TV show that's relying on cameos, though.

I agree that its a little too early to tell if they've shot themselves in the foot. I think the writers probably have an idea of the sort of story they wish to tell and may have a few surprises up their sleeves that ties in with the Gokaigers learning to become better people, true heroes, a real team, and may also lead to the restoration of the powers of the other Sentai teams, possibly to deal with whatever threat looms on the horizon. we've got a long way to go before we get any answers, but there's no rush.
