LONDON (AP) - Blond. James Blond. Daniel Craig, a 37-year-old, sandy-haired Englishman was introduced Friday as the new James Bond, ending months of speculation. He'll star in ``Casino Royale,'' directed by Martin Campbell, due out next year.

``I had a couple of martinis when I found out,'' said Craig, who replaces Pierce Brosnan in the role of the suave spy.

Craig is the first blond actor and only the second Englishman to star as Agent 007 in the movie series. His selection was revealed as he was whisked down the Thames River on Friday aboard a military boat to a waterside news conference.

``It is a huge iconic figure in movie history, and those things don't come along very often,'' Craig said.

Producer Michael G. Wilson said 200 actors had been considered for the role, but Craig was the only one who had been offered it. Craig said he only found out Monday that he definitely had the part.

Speculation about the new Bond had also included Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.

At the packed press conference inside a Royal Navy facility on the Thames, the new Bond fielded questions from newspaper and television reporters, tabloid gossip columnists and a journalist from the Ministry of Defense magazine.

Craig brushed aside questions about supermodel Kate Moss and actress Sienna Miller - both tabloid fixtures whom he has reportedly dated.

``I'm not going to get into that,'' he said.

``I understand that doing this doesn't help'' preserve his privacy, Craig added. ``We'll take it one day at a time.''

Of the other five actors to play 007, only Roger Moore is English-born. Sean Connery is Scottish, George Lazenby is Australian, Timothy Dalton was born in Wales and Brosnan is Irish.

Relatively unknown outside Britain, Craig appeared in the landmark 1990s British TV drama ``Our Friends in the North'' and in films including ``The Mother,'' ``Enduring Love'' and ``Layer Cake.''

His screen credits also include ``Road to Perdition,'' ``Sylvia'' and this year's thriller ``The Jacket'' with Adrien Brody. He is now filming another thriller, ``The Visiting,'' with Nicole Kidman.

Ian Fleming's first-ever Bond novel, originally published in 1953, ``Casino Royale'' is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers.

Campbell - who directed Brosnan's first Bond film, ``GoldenEye,'' in 1995 - said the movie would be ``tougher and grittier'' than previous films, with ``more character and less gadgets.'' He said the story would begin with Bond first becoming a ``00'' agent.

``It is really the arc in which he becomes Bond,'' Campbell said. ``He starts out just having earned his double-0 stripes and comes out at the end the Bond we know and love.''

``A lot of the embryonic Bond things will come out in the film - how he gets the Aston Martin, how he mixes a Martini.''

``Casino Royale'' is due to being filming in January in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and at Pinewood Studios near London. Campbell said the budget likely will exceed $100 million.

I was gonna be mad at this no-name, but no... he was in that movie L4YER CAKE I talked about a while ago and he was fantastic.

This guy's one killer actor and I'm glad it's not somebody whose name would overshadow the name James Bond.

He might just do alright.

Find L4YER CAKE to see what he's capable of.

I guess I'll wait to reserve judgement on the new Bond as I really haven't seen any of the actor's work. I just REAAAAAALY like Bronsan as Bond though. Haven't seen a Bond that good since Connery.

"Sean Connery IS James Bond"

Sean Connery recommended Ewan MacGregor.

I wanted Ewan MacGregor.

Bleh, someone must've seen the Star Wars prequels and said... nah.

not that I didn't enjoy the prequels...

and I know I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this: but PERSONALLY, in my OPINION - Pierce sucked. I liked *gasp* George Lazenby better than he.

Roger Moore is my favorite Bond as well. He was the first one I ever watched on TV. I've never seen Lazenby in Her Majersty Secret Servies yet. Connery and Bronsan were good too. Dalton Bond was a little too gritty for me though

I think the main issue with Timothy Dalton is that he didn't have enough time to find his niche in the role. I mean, he only lasted 2 movies before the lawsuits and all that kicked off and stalled the whold Bond franchise for years afterward.

PLEASE tell me you're joking!! Although I did like Lazenby better than Dalton, Pierce was a HELL of a lot better than Lazenby! Besides, Lazenby doesn't have Schwetty Balls or Weiners

Hell yes! I loved that movie. I'm glad he got the role, but I would not have minded seeing Clive Owen...

WIIIIIIIIIIII!
It goes like this, IMO:

Connery
Brosnan
Moore
Tie between Lazenby and Dalton for worst.

This guy sounds like he might do a good job...but a Bond prequel? Why? We don't need to know his past history.

Sigh

Why I liked George Lazenby as James Bond better than Pierce Brosnan.

1) I loved the movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" in general. Less emphasis on gadgets, GREAT fights and choreography.
2) On that line of thought, George more than held his own in aforementioned fight scenes. When he hits people, it's believable. Kinda like Sean. With Pierce, I never could believe that such a scrawny guy like him could really beat up all them thugs.
3) Nice low voice. Roger Moore got away with not having a low, intimidating, powerful yet suave voice. Not Pierce.
4) UA was all set to offer George more Bond movie roles. It was George Lazenby who was a dumbass at the time and thought he'd be better off doing other movies. He wasted his chance.

Of course, that's just my two cents. I can understand that those who like Pierce love the fact that he IS arguably the most "sophisticated" and "suave" James Bond. But for ME, James Bond is not about MERE sophistication and suave. I remember that Bond is also a ruthless killer, fighter and, as Dr. No called him, a "policeman". It is THAT aspect of Bond that I couldn't reconcile with Pierce's portrayal of him.

Of course, you know who best fits the Bond of Ian Fleming's novels? TIMOTHY DALTON.
