Cronela's Mansion, A Cross-Platform Homebrew, Launches Kickstarter

There are ambitious homebrews, and then there’s Cronela’s Mansion, created by game developer Straynus. Most people who develop for retro systems pick one system and focus all their energy there. Straynus just couldn’t pick one…he developed a cross-platform game with NES, SNES, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance versions, PLUS a modern console version…each different! Five different versions of the same game? You’d have to be a maniac…or just a fan of Maniac Mansion, the classic Lucasarts PC game that got an NES port back in the day. Cronela’s is an obvious riff on such a title, with its point-and-click exploration gameplay, wacky gothy characters, and puzzles that can only be solved through trial and error. Help Tommy, the rad dude with sunglasses, find his missing brother and maybe win the attention of green-haired Hedda (who owns a talking tarantula). A unique homebrew means a unique crowdfunding campaign. There will be physical versions for each variant of Cronela’s Mansion (yes, even the Switch version). Some are more expensive than others, and the most expensive aren’t what you think. Game Boy is the lowest at 50 Euros / 52 dollars, of course, but the NES version is in the middle […]

This looks interesting, but I’m always wary of crowdfunded games. Too many projects overpromise and underdeliver, and with five versions, I wonder if Straynus has the resources to finish everything. I’ll keep an eye on it, but I’m not pledging money unless I see solid gameplay footage and a guarantee that physical versions won’t take years to ship.

Homebrew games have come a long way. Back in the day, it was mostly simple ROM hacks or small fan projects, but now we’re seeing full-fledged games that rival official releases. Cronela’s Mansion stands out because of how far it's pushing the limits—custom boards, multiple platforms, even a proper retail-style PC release. It’s pricey, but for those who appreciate the craft behind homebrew, it’s probably worth it.

I have massive respect for Straynus. Porting a game across five different platforms isn’t just ambitious—it’s a logistical nightmare. Different hardware, different programming languages, different limitations. It’s rare to see someone attempt this, let alone sell physical editions for all versions. The fact that they’re doing a proper SNES cartridge with a custom board is impressive. I might not have the cash to back this at the moment, but I’ll be following the project closely.

I think they’ve proven they can develop for multiple platforms. They have demos available on Itchio for NES, GBA, GB, and PC.
I’ve been following this project for a while, and at first, I thought they were just selling dreams. But then I played the NES demo, and it completely blew my mind. I’d love to see this game come to life someday.
Projects like this keep the hope alive that retro consoles will stay alive, too.
Yeah, it’s an ambitious project, but they have several people on the development and art team, so I don’t think it’ll be too hard for them to pull it off.
