Have you thought about following the D&D Actual Play program Critical Role, but find the immense backlog too intimidating? (Me too.) Want an easily digestible sampler that’s self-contained in one episode? (So do I.) Want more money to go to wildfire relief in Los Angeles? (You bet….golly, is there a way both these wishes can be fulfilled at once?) If that echoing voice is also you, then you’ll be intrigued to know Critical Role will be hosting a special one-shot episode aimed at raising money for LA recovery efforts. The episode will be called “Freaky Thursday” and will feature Bells Hells, the cast from CR’s third tabletop campaign. And it’s the entire original cast: Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, and Game Master Matthew Mercer. It will also be interactive. How so? During the playthrough, fans can visit Critical Role’s Tiltify page to donate or purchase rewards that act as “votes,” directly affecting what happens. “Story elements with the most donations will take center stage in the adventure,” says the Critical Role Foundation. “Each fundraising milestone reached will unlock unique surprises, including new allies, unexpected adversaries, or even character sheet swaps, ensuring […]

I love that Critical Role is using its platform for such an important cause! Wildfires in California are devastating year after year, and it’s great to see a community-driven initiative like this. The interactive element is a brilliant way to engage fans while raising money. Watching Bells Hells navigate story twists decided by donations sounds both chaotic and fun, and having the whole cast together makes it even better. I hope this event raises a significant amount and sets a precedent for more charity-driven TTRPG streams.

I respect the effort, but I wonder how much these donation-driven mechanics will impact the storytelling. Part of what makes Critical Role great is the natural flow of character-driven moments. If major story elements are dictated by the audience, does that take away from the roleplaying aspect? That said, I do appreciate that the money is going to a good cause, and the emergency fund idea is smart. I’ll tune in to see how well they balance the interactivity with the actual narrative.

I don’t watch Critical Role regularly, but this seems like a great way to get a taste of what they do while supporting a serious cause. I like that some of the donations will go into an emergency fund for future disasters, not just this one. More charities should think ahead like that. If the event turns out to be a good introduction to CR’s style, I might finally give them a proper watch.

This is exactly why I love this show and the community around it! Matt Mercer and the CR cast always find creative ways to engage viewers, and using that creativity to help wildfire relief is incredible. “Freaky Thursday” sounds like it could be total chaos, and I’m here for it! Seeing character sheet swaps as an unlockable milestone is genius—I can only imagine the kind of antics that will cause. Hoping this raises a ton of money!

I appreciate what Critical Role is doing, but I wish they were making it fully accessible. Putting it on Beacon alongside Twitch and YouTube makes me wonder if they’ll eventually start gating more of their content behind a paywall. I understand needing to support their business, but a charity event should be as easy to access as possible. As long as people can still watch for free and donate at their own pace, I’ll give it a shot.

This hits close to home for me. Wildfires have become a terrifying reality in California, and it’s frustrating how underprepared we always seem to be. Seeing a group like Critical Role step up to help means a lot. I like that they’re thinking long-term with the emergency fund, too—disasters don’t stop once the news coverage dies down. I’ll definitely be tuning in, and I hope they raise a substantial amount.

I’ve heard of Critical Role but never got into it because of the insane backlog. A single self-contained episode sounds like the perfect way to test the waters. Plus, it’s for a good cause, so even if I don’t become a fan, I can feel good about supporting it. The interactive element seems fun, though I wonder if it’ll make things feel too chaotic. Either way, it’s worth checking out.
