CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT
EPISODE 1
=======================================================
THIS IS A VAGUE RE-ENACTMENT OF A REAL LIFE CASE HANDLED BY THE SPECIAL INVESTIGATION SECTION OF THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT OF THE SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE.
=======================================================
A couple was quarreling in the middle of the night, and attracted the attention of their immediate neighbours.
"I have NO MORE money!" Jonathan Wong screamed at his wife, Diana Wong, while pulling at her arm. "Give me some money please!"
"No!" Diana shook his hand off, in front of their three-year old daughter, Huiling. "I want a divorce! I don't want to live with such a useless man like you! Come Huiling!" Diana grabbed her daughter's hand and stormed out of the flat, leaving Jonathan behind, staring at her with deep hatred in his eyes.
=======================================================
The next morning, Diana was waiting for a lift at the ground floor. She knew Jonathan was at work, and wanted to use this opportunity to pack hers and her daughter's belongings.
Diana came out from the lift on the 7th floor and was walking to her apartment when a boy came down from the staircase stealthily and whipped out a long kitchen knife, which was wrapped in a copy of "The New Paper", a daily tabloid.

A police cordon was set up around the lobby area of the 7th floor, where Diana Wong was stabbed to death brutally. The forensic scientist, Dr. Lau Jiahua, was conducting a test on the body, when two CID officers - Insp. Basil Yeo and his partner Sgt. Janet Toh were allowed entry into the cordon.
"Dr. Lau," Basil called out.
"Inspector Yeo," Dr. Lau replied. He stood up and looked at the two officers.
"So, what have we got?" Janet asked. Dr. Lau turned back, looked at the body and shook his head.
"Very, very bad." he said. "She was stabbed five times in the back," he squatted down, and showed the wounds to the officers. "And also, both her arms were slashed twice." he held up her arms, showing the officers the slash marks. "Considering the depth of the wounds, they must have been made with a kitchen knife."
"Time of death?"
"About three hours earlier. There are a few bruises here, which indicate that the killer was not really that strong. Just strong enough to overpower her, though it is enough to prove that the killer is a male, or a really strong female."
"Any signs of rape?" Basil asked, as Janet took down notes in her notebook.
"Nope, but her wallet was gone," Dr. Lau replied.
"So it's a robbery?" Janet presumed.
"Most likely. Anything else doc?" Basil asked again, placing his hands on his hips and looking down at the body.
"We found this piece of yesterday's New Paper near the circuit box," Dr. Lau passed a Ziploc bag with a torn edge of the newspaper to Basil, and pointed to the circuit box on the wall.
"Hmm..." Basil said, observing the Ziploc bag. "I wonder if Chua has done his job yet."
=======================================================
Meanwhile, Insp. Chua Weijie and his relatively older partner, Sgt. Viknash, have gone to Jonathan's office to inform him about his wife's death. They approach the receptionist at the counter.
"Excuse miss," Viknash said. "CID." he said, flashing his warrant card.
"Yes? May I help you?" the receptionist asked.
"Is there any Jonathan Wong working here?" Weijie asked.
"Used to, but he was sacked a few days ago." the receptionist replied. "Is anything the matter?"
"We need his help in a investigation into a murder," Weijie said. "What was he fired for?" the receptionist looked to the left and right, and then moved closer to him.
"Word is, he complained that the Boss didn't pay him enough," the receptionist said. "Then he got angry and
"Ok, thanks." Weijie said, as he and Viknash headed out of the office. Outside, the two officers discussed the case.
"Now where can this Jonathan character be man?" Viknash asked.
"I don't know.." Weijie replied. "He was retrenched, a few days later his wife was killed. What's more he isn't at home right now. Sir sent us to notify him, which means she did not send any other officer to do so... Something's really fishy here."
"This.. You'd better call Bas and Janet," Viknash said. Weijie nodded, and took out his mobile and started dialling, as they stepped into Weijie's Nissan Cefiro.
=======================================================
"So.. We have five stabs in the back and two slashes on each arm. Plus a few bruises here and there."
"Hello?" Basil spoke into his mobile phone headset, while driving. "Chua?" Janet looked at him as he mentioned Insp. Chua. "So he wasn't at work today?"
"Yeah, we suspect that he might have somehow been involved in his wife's murder," Weijie said, now standing outside a bank with Viknash.
"What do you mean?"
"A large sum of money was supposedly deposited into Jonathan Wong's account just an hour ago." he said.
"How large?"
"1.5 million dollars?"
"1.5 million?!" Basil exclaimed. Janet looked at him and raised her eyebrows. "I could buy a condo with that!"
"By the way, have you questioned the neighbours?"
"We'll do that tomorrow," Basil replied. "We have a lot of work to do with the case at hand.."
"We'll go with you guys tomorrow, if Diana Wong's wake is held."
"Ok." both Inspectors ended the conversation.
"Sir, what's going on?"
"Too many loopholes in this case," Basil said. "1.5 million is a large sum, but why was he able to get such a large sum of money as soon as his wife was killed?"
"Insurance?" Janet raised a possibility.
"It might be.." Basil replied. "We'll call up the insurance companies later."
=======================================================
At the Police Cantonment Complex, where CID HQ was located, the four officers were working hard on the case, when a door labelled 'ASP Ku' opened, and ASP (Asst. Superintendent of Police) Kitson Ku stepped out to check on his team.
"So guys," ASP Ku asked. "How's the case going on so far?"
"Not too shabby Sir," Viknash replied. "Basil and Janet are checking if Diana Wong had any insurance policy in which the beneficiary is her husband."
"They're working very hard, but how about you?" ASP Ku asked.
"Yes Sir Insp. Chua and I are listing the possible motives of the killer."
"Good." ASP Ku said. "People, gather around here!" he ordered. The four officers stopped what they were doing and gathered around their department head. "Excellent work so far everyone. Basil, Janet. Weijie, Viknash. I've never seen you people working so hard before."
"Thank you Sir!" the four of them shouted.
"Because of your excellent work, I want this case solved in 72 hours, without delay." he ordered. "Is that clear?"
"Yes Sir!" they replied, and went back to their work.
=======================================================
The next day, Diana's funeral wake was held at her void deck. Jonathan was kneeling down and sobbing in front of her picture, which was placed on an altar, with her coffin behind. The coffin area was concealed from public view with a ceiling-to-ground yellow canvas. His parents-in-law, and daughter were at a table near the altar, also crying.
Basil and Janet stepped up in front of Diana's picture and offered her joss sticks.
"Rest assured, Mrs. Wong." Janet said. "We'll find your murderer."
"Who.. Who are you?" Diana's father, Mr Teo asked.
"CID." Basil and Janet showed their warrant cards to the grieving parents. "We're here to question your son-in-law."
"He is not my son-in-law!" Mr Teo shouted. "He is a despicable rat! I would have beaten him long ago if not for my daughter!"
"Mr Teo calm down." Janet intervened.
"Jan you take here," Basil said. "I'll go question Jonathan."
=======================================================
A teenage boy walked past a playground. He entered the nearby Neighbourhood Police Post and sat down in front of the duty officer, who was busy taking down notes from an earlier resident's report.
"Yes boy?" the Sergeant asked.
"Officer." he said. "I killed someone."
"Give me a moment." the officer said, and turned a new page in his report file, and dialled the number to CID.
=======================================================
Weijie and Viknash were questioning a housewife living in the flat below Diana's.
"So you're saying they had an argument the night before Diana's death?" Weijie asked, as Viknash noted down the housewife's statement.
"Not only an argument, a very hot one indeed!" the housewife said.
"What were they arguing about?"
"Money lah!" the housewife exclaimed. "I quarrel with my husband about money all the time!"
"Excuse me ma'am we don't want to know what you do with your husband." Weijie reprimanded her.
"Jonathan was jealous Diana made more than him! She was an insurance agent, compared to his lowly junior office clerk job!"
"Was this the first time such an argument took place?" Viknash asked, to clarify the matter.
"No! No! No!" the housewife shouted. "They've argued over many things.. but most of the time they argued over money and the custody of the child!"
"That woman is too much.." Viknash turned around and looked at her door. "Typical busybody."
"Well, what can we do?" Weijie shrugged, as both of them went down the stairs, and saw Basil and Janet already waiting for them. "So what did you guys get?"
"Diana's parents apparently do not like Jonathan that very much." Janet reported. "Sir went to question Jonathan about the bank transfer, but that fellar... He cried so much, it makes me wonder whether he's really a man or not."
"Come on Jan," Viknash said. "You can't expect everyone to be so strong right, anyway it's his wife who was murdered!"
"What did you guys find out?"
"She was an insurance agent, he was a junior office clerk. Add in the ego. You do the math." Weijie replied.
"Equals jealousy?" Janet said, solving the "equation".
"Let's talk back at the office." Weijie said, pointing towards their cars, as Basil turned back to look at Jonathan, who was still kneeling down and sobbing, with a sceptic look.
"Junior office clerk." he sneered, and ran to catch up with the rest.
=======================================================
Back at the office in the evening, the four are collating the data they have collected over the day.
"The insurance company just called." Janet said, slamming down the phone.
"Hey Jan, relax with the phone lah.." Viknash joked, as she flashed a short smile.
"They claim that Diana Wong had bought a policy from them just a few days earlier, right after Jonathan was sacked."
"There was a call which came in earlier today." ASP Ku said, walking out from his office. "A boy confessed to stabbing Diana Wong."
"The case is solved then?" Weijie asked, throwing a file on the table.
"No Weijie," ASP Ku replied him. "The boy said he was instigated to do it."
"But by who?"
"Jonathan Wong." Basil shot out the name of his No.1 suspect. "I can practically hand him an Oscar for Best Actor right now."
"You mean to say, he was faking the crying?" Weijie asked. "It all ties in now," he concluded.
"Not yet." ASP Ku said. "We still have to bring the boy in to do a photo-fit. When can you do it?"
"We'll pick him up after school tomorrow."
"Ok then." their superior replied. "We'll stop here for today, but don't forget to list any new leads you find. First thing tomorrow, Weijie and Viknash, you two bring Jonathan Wong in for questioning."
"Yes Sir." both of them replied.
"Basil and Janet," he said. "In the morning, your job is to visit the insurance company where Diana worked, assuming she had bought her policy from her own company. Get the details and estimated payout from the company, and then get details of Jonathan Wong's bank account."
"Yes Sir." Basil replied.
"I've not finished Inspector," ASP Ku said. "I will call the bank to freeze his assets, and your second job is to bring in the boy for the photo-fit. Is that clear, the four of you?"
"Yes Sir!"
"Dismissed."
