Another complete shame. I love Devilman, but I keep hearing that the movie was terrible. Guess I should be glad I haven't seen it.
I've seen the movie.
I am a HUGE Devilman fan. (The 70s anime series is my favorite incarnation.) This movie superficially follows Gou Nagai's manga, but despite fanservices here and there (including a quick cameo by Nagai himself!), it's just so artsy-fartsy, slow-paced, and convoluted. This movie should've been better, but Toei took the Hollywood route (the producer, who's such a douche, fired the initial crew, including Japanese monster veteran Shin'ichi Wakasa, who was set to do the makeup and costumes!). I was very, very disappointed by this film.
Bob Sapp is in this movie, but here, he totally makes Don Frye (
Godzilla Final Wars) look like Nick Adams. (Sapp's dialogue is what I like to call typical incomprehensible "gaijin babble," and he didn't even try to act in this film, he was just too casual!)
Ironically, the director, Hiroyuki Nasu, passed away after this film's release.
