Just the other day I was wondering if we’d finally seen the last of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the comics rack, which would be pretty significant, as she’s been a presence there since her show was actually running. We’ve had the series that followed the continuity of the current TV show while telling original stories (the first Dark Horse one), the series that was a literal canon continuation of the TV show shepherded by pre-disgraced Whedon himself (the second Dark Horse one), and the series that started it all over with a new continuity (the Boom one). What’s left? Guess Dynamite will have to figure that out. They’ve just obtained the rights to both Buffy and Angel and will be bringing both back in separate yet connected comics. The announcement is early and they haven’t said anything about what canon they want to follow or if they’re going to make up their own. Buffy fans are very detail-oriented. Second, handling both Buffy and Angel as connected titles can be exciting, but also risky. I’ve never read any Buffy comics, but I watched the show last year on streaming. It was a little old in style, but I liked it a lot. I didn’t know Buffy had comics for so long! This new comic might be a good way for me to start reading without needing to learn everything that happened before. I like that a new writer is taking control, and maybe she can make it easier for people like me to enjoy without confusion. I also think it’s cool that Angel is getting his own book. I didn’t like him that much on the show, but I’m curious how he works as a detective. I hope they make it fun and not too serious.

Buffy, at its best, was a story about growing up and feeling like an outsider. It used fantasy to talk about real pain. If Thompson taps into that, it might work. If not, it’ll be another forgettable attempt. I’ll remain cautiously interested. But I do wonder — are new readers even asking for this? Or is this just for us, the people who watched it in the 90s?
