What Am I made for?
“BALLERINA” (2025) is an action and thriller film set in the John Wick universe; a spin-off following a ballerina-assassin, to be released on June 6, 2025. ♦ They Killed My Father In “BALLERINA” Eve Macarro’s father was murdered by assassins, and she’s out to avenge his death. Winston Scott takes her in, and she is trained by The Director in the traditions of the Ruska Roma, which is the same organization that trained John Wick. This film is in the tradition of the other John Wick movies, i.e. secret societies with high-stakes battles involving intense fight choreography. Ana de Armas started her acting career in Cuba, then moved to Spain, and later to Hollywood. For her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde” (2022) she became the first Cuban actress nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Keanu Reeves is a Canadian actor known for his roles in action, sci-fi, and thriller films. His career spans 40+ years, and he has a reputation for being a really nice guy and engages in many philanthropic efforts. I’ve seen all the John Wick movies in theaters, and I’m excited for this. The trailer looked solid, and Ana de Armas seems like a good fit. I like that Keanu Reeves is in it too—it makes it feel more connected. The Ruska Roma background is cool; it adds to the world-building. I don’t expect it to beat Chapter 4’s box office, but $35 million isn’t bad. I’m just hoping they keep the tone and pace tight like the main series.

I worry that they’re pushing the John Wick universe too hard. Not every character needs a spin-off. “The Continental” was okay, but it didn’t grab me. Now “Ballerina” might just feel like filler unless it has a strong story. I’m tired of seeing big fight scenes with no emotional weight. If they want to build a larger universe, they should slow down and focus on writing. The action alone isn’t enough anymore.

The most interesting part of this for me is Eve Macarro’s backstory. The murder of her father and her training by The Director could give the film emotional depth. I’m always drawn to characters with inner struggles. If they can show us how Eve transforms from a grieving daughter into a skilled assassin, the story could be powerful. I don’t care as much about box office numbers—I care about whether the plot earns its action. Hopefully the script gives her room to grow.

I’ve followed the John Wick series since the first movie, and I think this spinoff, Ballerina, sounds like a strong addition. Ana de Armas is a great choice to lead — she has the right mix of grace and toughness, which fits a ballerina-assassin perfectly. The fact that Chad Stahelski was involved again with the action sequences is promising, since his work on John Wick is always very precise and exciting. The projected $35 million opening shows the franchise still has solid appeal, especially with the male 25+ crowd, but I hope it also attracts more women viewers this time. The high production costs could be risky, but the success of Chapter 4 makes me optimistic. It’s interesting that they combined ballet with assassin training; that sounds unique and different from typical action movies. I’m definitely planning to watch it on opening weekend.

Imagine that — this whole huge John Wick franchise started because a spoiled brat killed a dog, and now here we are with a spinoff because a villain killed a dog. It’s wild how such a simple, tragic event became the spark for this whole world of intense action and stories
