anyone consider star trek toku?

Yeah, the Japanese do consider it Tokusatsu. I've seen it quite a few times on the Toku board of 2chan.

Star trek is a toku. Only weaboo's who think ONLY Japanese things can be toku would think other wise.

Didn't you used to dick all over people who used the term 'weaboo'?

If by toku you mean "special effects", then yes.

However, if by toku you mean "people who beat up monsters" then no. Star Trek doesn't feature that stuff.

OK yes there are monsters and Captain Kirk gets into brawls now and again but he doesn't wear armour or spandex when fighting.

And the beating up stuff doesn't happen on a regular basis either. At least not physically human vs. human. Alright so you do get ship vs. ship fights.

Screw what I said. I don't think of Star Trek as a toku, but from the paragraphs I've written above, you could argue it is.

When I think of toku, I think of superheroes fighting against organisations bent on evil. That doesn't happen regularly in Trek. OK, so there was the Dominion War in DS9 and the Xindi in Enterprise but it isn't like in Power Rangers when they're always doing it. And you do get superhuman characters, but they don't recruit a superman or an elite force to wear spandex/armour and go beating up aliens every week.

Right, I'm rambling, I'll stop.

I often think that when people think of tokusatsu, they think henshin heroes, which isn't the case. Yeah, all henshin heroes are tokusatsu, but not all tokusatsu are henshin hero shows.

Yup I sure did, and then I realized just how right some of those people were.

And anime has plenty of henshin heroes, too! (Eightman, Gatchaman, Polymar, Guyver, etc.) It's just the "Japanese Superhero" (or J-Hero) genre, plain and simple. "Anime" and "tokusatsu" are the mediums into which the J-Hero genre fits.

Sad to say, the word "tokusatsu" has lost its meaning to confused post-1993 superhero fans in the US, who are simply looking for an exotic word to describe superheroes, when all the time, Japan always called them "Suupaahiiroo!" Duh!

The same thing befell the words "Showa" and "Heisei" when it came to American Godzilla fans. *shudder* Don't get me started on that one!
