What Am I made for?
“A Widow’s Game” (2025) is a Netflix crime thriller film based on a true crime case from Spain, known as La Viuda Negra de Patraix (The Black Widow of Patraix). Memorable quote: “The truth isn’t what you believe—it’s what you can prove.” ♦ ‘Who Killed My Husband?’, cried the Grieving Murderous Widow In “A Widow’s Game”, the main character, Maje (full name is María Jesús Moreno), was a nurse in Valencia, Spain, who became notorious for orchestrating the murder of her husband. She had not even been married a year. Maje was cunning and manipulative, had multiple affairs, and convinced one of her lovers to kill her husband. In 2020, Maje was sentenced to 22 years in prison, and her lover received 17 years.

It’s always tricky when a film is based on a true crime case. There’s a fine line between telling the story and turning it into entertainment. “A Widow’s Game” walks that line okay. Not perfectly, but okay. They kept some facts and changed others, but it didn’t feel disrespectful. What I liked most was how they portrayed Eva’s frustration when everyone else was fooled by Maje. That happens in real investigations—people want to believe a version of someone they know. The movie got that right.

I liked it. It made me feel something. I think Ivana Baquero was very cold, in a good way. She made Maje seem real. I didn’t know about this crime before, so I was shocked at how she used people. I liked how the detective didn’t give up. She was strong but quiet. I wish they gave more time to the other characters. The ending was fast. But I still think it’s a good drama. I would recommend it.

From a screenwriting perspective, the structure was tight. The pacing wasn’t fast, but it had a purpose. The flashbacks were well-placed, and the dialogue wasn’t overdone. I could see the tension building in small details. I also liked that Eva wasn’t portrayed as a superhero cop. She’s sharp but still human. There were a few clunky lines, but overall, the script respected the intelligence of the audience. Not every crime film does that.

As someone who follows Spanish legal history, I was really impressed they kept the setting authentic. Valencia is not just a backdrop; it’s a character in the story. Too often these Netflix productions ignore the importance of place. I appreciated the detail of how the investigators worked through the case, even with social pressure and media attention. Maje’s story is not just about one crime—it shows how modern relationships can become twisted by ego and secrecy.

Not really my type of movie. I watched it with my wife and she liked it more than I did. I thought it was too slow. The crime part was interesting but I guessed the ending early on. The acting was good, especially the detective. I might watch something else from Ivana Baquero though. She seems talented.

Maje’s behavior is a textbook case of narcissism and emotional manipulation. From a psychological point of view, the film did a decent job showing how someone like her can twist people to do what she wants. I wish they explored her past more—what made her that way? The affair aspect was less interesting to me than how she controlled people. Eva, on the other hand, had to be logical and emotionally detached, and that’s not easy in such a case. It’s a dynamic I appreciated watching unfold.

To be honest, I didn’t know anything about the real case. I just watched it because it popped up on Netflix. It started kind of slow for me, but I stayed because of Carmen Machi. Her character felt like the only one actually doing something smart. The husband character didn’t feel developed enough though, so when he died, I didn’t feel much. Still, I think the movie made me want to Google the real story, so maybe that’s a win?
