Playtonic Games was founded ten years ago this month. Made up of ex-Rare employees, the new studio was dedicated to making the kind of games Rare made back in its golden age, and its first offering was a direct attempt at that: Yooka-Laylee, a 3D adventure buddy platformer hewing as close to Banjo-Kazooie as possible. Yooka-Laylee got a sequel of sorts, a 2D affair mimicking Donkey Kong Country, but since then Playtonic has served as more of a publisher than a developer, sticking their label on indie hits like Li’l Gater Game and Demon Turf. The gecko and bat are coming out of hibernation, but only for a remake of their first game. I know there were people who didn’t like Yooka-Laylee (they would not shut up about it) but I thought it did a decent job bringing back the late 90s collectathon. Yooka-Replaylee seems like a response to the maysayers, though, a rebuild of the game with refinements and additions in almost every area. And the latest refinement Playtonic has revealed, in celebration of their anniversary? An expanded role for Rextro. Rextro was the orange, low-poly dinosaur who usually hung around a giant arcade machine. As you progressed through […]

This sounds like a complete overhaul! I always thought Yooka-Laylee had potential, but it fell short in a few areas. The Rextro expansion is a fun twist, and the visual and audio upgrades are impressive. The new challenges and collectibles are a welcome addition. I'm particularly interested in the revised controls and camera, as those were my main gripes with the original. I am excited to play this game.

Rextro? Really? Look, I get it, nostalgia sells. But focusing on a side character for a major expansion? I would have preferred they focused on more substantial content. I mean, the core game was fine, but it lacked the charm and polish of its inspirations. I’m not convinced that adding more minigames is what this game needed. I am not going to be buying this game, I am going to wait for reviews.

The original Yooka-Laylee had its flaws, but it was a fun game. This remake looks like it's fixing all the problems. The Rextro expansion is a great idea, and the other improvements are exactly what I wanted. I am going to be purchasing this game.

I’m intrigued. I admit, the original release didn't fully capture the magic of the games it emulated, but this “Replaylee” sounds like a genuine effort to right those wrongs. The art and animation overhaul, the orchestral score, and the refined controls are all promising. I'm particularly interested in the world map and challenge tracker; navigation was a bit of a headache in the original. I'm not expecting a masterpiece, but I'm hoping for a solid, enjoyable experience. I will be looking for reviews before purchasing.

I find it interesting that they are focusing on Rextro. I always thought he was a fun character. I am curious to see how they have expanded his role in the game. The other improvements sound good too, but I am most interested in the Rextro content. I hope they have added a lot of new minigames. I will be purchasing this game.
