A New Fan of Henshin

Hey There guys.
I've recently gotten into the whole Tokusatsu Henshin with Kamen Rider The First & The Next.
I've always been (always will be) a fan of Tokusatsu with the Toho Kaiju films and when I was a kid of the age of 4 and 5 with the original Power Rangers.
Something that peeked my interest in the genre was Kaiju Big Battel.
(If you don't know about it..I highly suggest you look into it! )

So being the lazy bum I am I started with the new Kamen Rider films.
I personally loved both.
Especially with their dark themes.
And with Sentai.. they're pretty much all light harted kids show right? Cause I watched the first episode of Go-Onger and I was like.. "Uuhh..."
I'm going to start Kamen Rider Kiva just for the heck of it.

Are there many "dark" tokusatsu henshin series? And if so where else should I start watching certain series?

you got the completely wrong impression of sentai:nono2:

i could see how go-onger made you think that though:disappoin

but anyways most sentai is dark, and have great stories and arcs

I suggest Jetman, zyuranger, flashman,changeman, maskman,gekiranger, and
liveman.

as for rider Kamen Rider Kiva is the hotest thing out right now, i suggest you

catch up quick because the series is getting a hell of alot better. wish

i could spoil but i won't. Den-O is great too. But sense your into that dark

stuff, try kabuto and back haha.

GARO is about as dark as it gets. Also it is what I would call one of the best Toku Series. TV-Nihon has it subbed, so you can to to their torrent place to get it.

Then there is Sh15uya which is pretty violent/dark.

As far as Kamen Rider, 555 is a pretty good one. It's darker than most.

Then I'm going to say you should watch Kamen Rider Blade, because is is my personal favorite. ^_~


IMO, faiz is much darker than Kabuto.. I didn't find Kabuto to be "dark" at all. v___v

u should start with Kamen rider Agito and Go Up,

Personally I like a dark series but it's also about a coherent storyline and of course plenty of action.

If you liked the revamp movies, you should also check out the series that inspired them, V3 and especially the original. They have wackier moments, but they're mostly pretty serious and dark in a different sort of way. The stories are usually simple, but easy to follow and there's some darker themes explored within (loss of humanity, evil organizations, etc.) Plus there's always a ton of action. I'd especially recommend the first 13 of the original series; the suits and effects are simple by today's standards but they're loaded with atmosphere and kickass fights. And you get to see the original Spider, Bat & Cobra!

Also, I love Kaiju Big Battel! Only been able to see it live once, but it was a blast.

Whoa.
Hell Fucking Yes.
Saw a clip of that.
That's a must watch.

As far as Sentai goes, the shows started getting a bit more light hearted around the time of Carranger. I havent seen much before Gaoranger, but Ive seen some of Liveman, Fiveman, and Dairanger and those are pretty intense.

With that being said, dont let the "light-heartedness" steer you away from watching other shows like Gaoranger, Dekaranger, Magiranger. those shows are pretty light but they have very good storylines. Some say that Dekaranger doesnt have much of story, but the characters do develop throughout the show and its sort of a different take on the story format.

Since it seems like Go-onger is the first Sentai you were exposed to recently, its understandable that you have that impression, but, to me, its the oddball of a line of very good shows.

As far as Kamen Rider, anything from Kuuga up to the present is fair game for a good show. My favorite is Faiz, but I really, REALLY enjoyed every other shows Ive seen since Agito. Kuuga is in the process of being subbed I believe so if you want, you can start from Agito and go up or from Den-o and go down. Either way, you are in for a treat.

oh, and you have to watch Timeranger, u might like it

Pretty much most toku shows are kid shows, and many are in fact light-hearted, but it's best to be open to watching other stuff for its story and not just series that are "dark". Kamen Rider Kiva has a good story going on so yeah, check that out. Other series that I've seen so far that have pretty good storylines are Gekiranger, GARO, and Cutie Honey the LIVE (if you like a bit of sexiness hehe).

By the way, you like giant battles? Well I should recommend watching some Ultraman series (UltraSeven X if you like something dark and different) and Gransazers, which has some of the best giant battles I've seen in a tokusatsu series.

Also, since you've seen THE FIRST and THE NEXT, you should check out the movie, ULTRAMAN THE NEXT, it's sort of like a revamp for Ultraman . I actually found a link where you can download it subbed: http://forums.henshinjustice.net/showthread.php?t=14176
