Atari Announces Breakout Beyond

Breakout was one of the earliest hit video games, introduced in 1978 when controlling a rectangular paddle to deflect a square ball was still cutting-edge. But you shouldn’t sell it short — all these years later, Breakout is still as addicting as it ever was, and Atari is bringing it back with Breakout Beyond. The main twist this time is that the original Breakout was a vertically oriented game (with a sideways CRT monitor), but this version will turn the game on its side. Often, you’ll be trying to deflect more than one ball at once. A combo score system has been added, along with special bricks that trigger various effects. There will be 72 levels in Breakout Beyond, plus a two player co-op mode. Those of you who feel you’ve seen this game once before (this SPECIFIC game, not Breakout in general) are somehow very clued into obscure and doomed get-rich-quick schemes. Breakout Beyond was originally announced in 2020 for the Intellivision Amico console — a complete disaster of a project ruled by incompetence and false promises. Look it up sometime if you want to amuse yourself. Point is Atari didn’t want Breakout Beyond to die with the Amico, […]

Atari absorbing Intellivision is wild. These two companies were rivals in the late '70s and early '80s, and now they’re one? It’s like Sega and Nintendo merging—it just feels surreal. That said, I’m glad Atari salvaged this game from the Amico mess. Breakout always had a timeless appeal, and with 72 levels and new mechanics, this might be the best version yet. I’ll definitely give it a shot on the VCS for that extra retro feel.

Finally, a co-op mode in Breakout! I love these kinds of arcade-style games, but they’re even better when you can team up with someone. Hopefully, the difficulty scales well, so one player isn’t just carrying the other. Also, I hope they include online play—I know it’s a simple game, but in 2025, local co-op alone isn’t enough. If they nail the gameplay, this could be a great party game.

Atari is slowly making a comeback, and I love to see it. Between their new game releases and VCS updates, they’re showing real dedication to classic gaming. I just hope they price this game fairly. Retro-inspired games often get overpriced, and while I love Breakout, I wouldn’t pay full price for something this simple. Give me a solid $10-15 price tag, and I’m in.

The fact that this game was originally an Amico project is hilarious. That console was doomed from the start, so it’s nice to see at least one of its games survive. Atari making this move is smart. They’re preserving their legacy while expanding their catalog. Whether this game succeeds or not, it’s a reminder that old ideas can still be profitable if handled correctly.

Breakout was one of my favorite games growing up, so seeing it get a fresh take is exciting. Atari making a new version while keeping the core gameplay intact is the right move. The addition of a co-op mode is interesting—playing solo was always fun, but sharing the challenge with a friend might add a new layer of enjoyment. I’m a little skeptical about turning the screen orientation sideways, though. Part of the fun was the vertical challenge. Hopefully, it still feels natural. Either way, I’ll be picking this up.
