“Gong Shim” aka “Dear Fair Lady Kong Shim” is a 2016 Korean drama, 20 episodes, categorized as Family, Slice-of-Life, Romance and Comedy (Rom-Com); and streaming on Netflix and Viki. Memorable Quote: “What’s wrong with this (seeds)? It’s not sprouting. … No matter how hard I try, they will be buried by the soil, right? … It’s just like me. … No matter how hard I try, I can’t bloom.” SUMMARY: The ugly duckling is always a swan. But somebody has to tell her.

Y’all really bringing up "Dear Fair Lady Kong Shim" like it wasn’t a whole mess of a drama? 😂 But I’ll admit, I was lowkey rooting for her to find her glow-up moment. The whole ugly duckling trope hits different, especially when you realize we all have our “buried seeds” moments. I mean, who doesn’t want to bloom after being buried under life’s drama, am I right? 🌱

Also, can we talk about how the love triangle was more confusing than my feelings watching it? Like, pick a lane, boys! But hey, it had its charm. Anyone else still humming the OST? 🎶

I watched Gong Shim a few months ago, and I really connected with her struggles. Growing up in a family that favors one sibling over another is something I can relate to personally. The way Gong Shim tries to assert herself and pursue her dream of studying art despite constant setbacks is inspiring. I especially liked how the show handled her relationship with Ahn Dan-Tae. He is quirky and unconventional, but his dedication and sincerity show that not all heroes are perfect or polished. The slow-building romance with Seok Joon-Soo felt natural and heartfelt, not forced, which I appreciated. The family dynamics were messy but realistic. I think this drama does a good job of reminding viewers that everyone has value, even if society or family doesn’t recognize it immediately.

Gong Shim’s story highlights how unfair family favoritism can be. Watching her attempt to bloom like the quote says, despite being buried under others’ expectations, felt very symbolic. I felt sad for her early in the show, but her growth is inspiring. Ahn Dan-Tae’s character added warmth and humor, and the way he supports Gong Shim without trying to overshadow her is nice to see. The show also touches on social inequality, like when Gong Shim is denied justice because of someone’s status, which made me reflect on real-world problems. The romance is gentle but meaningful, and the added mystery subplot kept the series interesting.
