8-bit homebrewers Jonny Dickinson and David Ko have been dabbling in the Assembly arts these past few months and have wound up concocting Necro Nancy, a spooky arcade shooter now available through Kickstarter. Young witch Nancy Graves is cleaning house. She has no choice; ghouls and ghosts are constantly popping out of holes and the only way to thwart them is to blip them away with magic before they hit the ground. Then there’s this giant SKULL to deal with…it all seems like too much! Good thing she can store a reserve blast called Purge Magic as she shoots, and unleash it at strategic times to clear the screen. Being an arcade game, the goal of Necro Nancy is to achieve the highest score possible, which will save to the cartridge — but you can also post it online. I first saw Necro Nancy when Jonny submitted the demo for it to this year’s Byte-Off, a competition for NES coders who use the software program NESMaker. It was undeniably one of the highlights of that competition and the finished product should be just as good if not better. I grew up playing games like Ghosts ‘n Goblins and Zelda II, so reading about Necro Nancy feels like coming home. The 8-bit visuals and chiptune soundtrack already sound perfect for a nostalgic Halloween session. I like that the developers added the online leaderboard too. It’s a nice mix of old and new ideas. The “Purge Magic” mechanic also looks fun, since it gives players a reason to plan their shots instead of just spamming the fire button. I already backed the $53 physical cart tier. I still have my old NES, and this will fit nicely beside my Battle Kid cartridge.

This sounds like one of those homebrew games that could become a cult hit. The gameplay loop reminds me of Bubble Bobble or Fantasy Zone. It is nice that they added hidden secrets and bonus rounds. I like when small developers use classic consoles as their creative outlet instead of trying to compete with AAA graphics. The fact that it won “Best Graphics” in Byte-Off V says a lot about their skills

This looks charming. I like simple arcade shooters where you just focus on timing and reaction instead of endless story scenes. Five themed stages are enough for an NES game, and the Purge Magic system seems balanced. I hope the soundtrack uses real chip sounds instead of samples.

It is nice to see people still making NES games in 2025. I do not even play much anymore, but I enjoy watching how passionate fans keep retro consoles alive. Necro Nancy looks like something that could have come out in 1989. The art style fits that time perfectly.
