Life Is Strange TV Show Finally Moving Forward

Square Enix and Legendary Entertainment have entered an agreement with Amazon Prime Video to adapt their video game Life Is Strange — specifically the first game — to the small screen in the form of a TV series. Charlie Covell (End of the F***ing World, KAOS) has been hired as the show’s executive producer and showrunner. You might be thinking, “First Call Of Duty and now this? How long does it take these days to adapt the obvious?” In the case of LiS, that’s where you’d be wrong…plans for this show were first announced nine entire years ago. That was back when Square and Legendary had to specifically state the show was “for digital streaming services” and not, say, Tuesdays at 9 on The CW. This was also back when there was only one game. Square did not mention a specific streamer back then and that’s probably because there wasn’t one. Now that Amazon has made an official commitment, they feel confident enough to re-announce the whole thing. Took long enough. The original Life Is Strange video game was about Max Caulfield, “a photography student, who discovers she can rewind time while saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe. […]

How is this supposed to work because the real game have a choose-your-own-adventure mechanic? How is that going to work on a TV show?

For me, the news feels late but welcome. Nine years is too long to sit on an idea. The industry has changed a lot since 2016, and now video game adaptations are more common. Amazon taking this on makes sense because they have the budget and distribution reach. Still, what matters most is tone. Life Is Strange is not an action game like Fallout or Halo. It is quiet, personal, and very emotional. If the show forgets that and tries to make it fast-paced or overly flashy, then it will fail.

I think the choice of Charlie Covell as showrunner is the strongest part of this news. Her previous work proved she understands troubled youth and unconventional love stories. That is exactly what Life Is Strange is. I expect she will capture the teenage awkwardness, the intense emotions, and the difficult moral decisions. It is interesting that the article already talks about fans wanting the “save Chloe” ending. That is true for many, but I personally think the tragedy of Arcadia Bay was what made the game powerful. If the series erases that in favor of wish fulfillment, it might lose the weight that made it stand out in the first place.

I am not that optimistic. Amazon has already adapted other properties and not all of them turned out well. Sometimes they spend big money, but the writing feels empty. Life Is Strange is not something that can survive weak writing. The article says it has been nine years in planning. For me, that is not reassuring, it means they did not know how to make it work. I think the game should just remain a game.

Honestly, I care more about the pacing than the ending. The game’s slow and reflective style is what made it different. If the show rushes, it will lose its character. I want to see Max staring at photographs, the quiet moments in her dorm, the feeling of walking through Arcadia Bay. If they skip these to fit only the big events, then it will just feel like another mystery-drama, not Life Is Strange.

My perspective is that this could be a good entry point for people who never played the game. Not everyone owns a console or wants to play a choice-based narrative. A TV show can reach millions who never touched the controller. So while fans may argue about which ending is better, I think the real challenge is to make new viewers care about Max and Chloe as much as gamers did. If that happens, it is already a success.

Whoever plays Max and Chloe must feel natural, not Hollywood-polished. The story depends on them being believable teenagers who are a little awkward, a little flawed, but deeply human. If Amazon casts models who look perfect but cannot capture the nervous energy of being 18, the show will collapse. Casting will decide if this adaptation works or not.
