It’s nearly Free Comic Book Day again. The first Saturday in May is a bountiful, blessed time for comics aficionados, a magical morning where any participating comic book shop will give you free stuff just for walking in the door. The tradeoff, though, is that they’ll expect you to scratch their back in return. FCBD is mainly a promotional event designed to boost awareness of local comics shops and boost sales within. Support your shop with a purchase in addition to the free junk! I’m so excited for Free Comic Book Day this year. My kids and I have been going every year since they were old enough to walk. It’s more than just grabbing free books—it’s something we do together. I usually let them choose a few titles they’re interested in, and I always make sure to buy a trade or a graphic novel to support the store. This year, they’ll probably want the Minecraft manga or Phineas and Ferb. I’m personally eyeing Fantastic Four/X-Men and Will Eisner: A Comics Biography. I love that there’s something for all ages. It’s nice to see comics still matter in 2025.

I only care about one thing: Speed Racer #0. That’s it. I’ve been collecting Speed Racer comics since the early 2000s, and I’m not missing this one. I don’t care about the freebies. I just hope my local shop gets enough copies.

I work at a small comic store in Nevada, and FCBD is always the most chaotic but also rewarding day of the year. We prepare weeks in advance. We don’t make much profit from it directly, but it brings new faces in, and that’s what keeps shops like ours alive. People sometimes forget that these “free” comics still cost the store money to order. So yes, we’re always grateful when someone grabs a graphic novel or even a pin to support us. This year, we ordered lots of Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe and Conan, since those go fast.

I just want to say thank you to VIZ for including Kagurabachi and Boruto. I’ve been dying to get into Kagurabachi but couldn’t afford to start a new series lately. Manga is expensive in my country. So this is huge for me. I’m also a fan of Beyblade X, and seeing it in the Gold tier made me smile. FCBD makes me feel included as a manga fan, not just a Western comics fan.

I’m 52 years old and I’ve been reading comics since I was in grade school. Seeing Flash Gordon, The Phantom, and Will Eisner titles on this list gave me hope. Most people these days only talk about Marvel or DC, but comics are so much bigger than that. FCBD reminds younger generations of where the medium came from. I’ll be picking up those classic titles and sharing them with my nephew. It’s my way of passing down the love.
