Given everything, if you expected Netflix’s Sandman to be cancelled after this upcoming season, you’d be right — and you got your inevitable confirmation today. The streaming service confirmed they would not be renewing the series beyond the season in production, but kinda disguised the reason why. “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg said to Variety. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.” Of course we know the real reason, and we won’t get into the ugly details here, but once-lauded author Neil Gaiman has been publicly disgraced and banished into non-job-itude after multiple accounts of sexual misconduct over the years went public. Everyone is cutting ties with him: Dark Horse has suspended his series Anansi Boys with just one unpublished issue in limbo, Amazon’s Good Omens […]

I absolutely loved the first season of Sandman and was eagerly waiting for the next one. Even though they're saying it's because they've covered all the source material, it feels more like an excuse. Netflix cancels so many shows I actually enjoy, and this is definitely one of them. Dead Boy Detectives sounded interesting too - that's a shame they can't find a way to make that work even without Gaiman involved.

I understand why Netflix canceled 'Sandman.' While it's a fantastic show, we can't ignore the serious sexual harassment allegations against Neil Gaiman. Supporting the show would imply condoning his actions. We need to hold people in power accountable for their behavior, regardless of their talent. This situation emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and just environment for everyone.

I hope this version is more concise and easier to understand.

I think it's a real shame to cancel the entire show because of the creator's actions. We should be able to appreciate art on its own merits, regardless of the artist's personal life. Plenty of talented people have done terrible things, but that doesn't negate the value of their work. It feels like we're throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The actors, writers, and crew all worked hard on the show, and they shouldn't be punished for Gaiman's behavior. It's a slippery slope when we start censoring art based on the creator's personal life. Where does it end?"

Two seasons of Sandman is better than none! I'm glad Netflix is committed to giving the story a proper conclusion. Sure, it's disappointing we won't get more, but at least we'll have a complete adaptation of Dream's arc. And who knows, maybe in the future there will be an opportunity to revisit the Sandman world with a fresh take. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing what season two brings!

Come on, Netflix. We all know this isn't just about the source material. It's about saving face. Neil Gaiman's allegations are serious, and Netflix is trying to distance themselves from the controversy. They might say they're honoring the story, but it feels more like they're trying to bury it. It's a shame, because Sandman is a phenomenal story. But hey, that's the entertainment industry for you, right? Bottom line matters more than art. Hopefully there are other platforms out there willing to take risks and bring quality content to viewers, even if it's created by flawed individuals.
