Netflix Confirms Sandman Will End With Second Season

-

Given everything, if you expected Netflix’s Sandman to be cancelled after this upcoming season, you’d be right — and you got your inevitable confirmation today. The streaming service confirmed they would not be renewing the series beyond the season in production, but kinda disguised the reason why.

“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg said to Variety. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

Of course we know the real reason, and we won’t get into the ugly details here, but once-lauded author Neil Gaiman has been publicly disgraced and banished into non-job-itude after multiple accounts of sexual misconduct over the years went public. Everyone is cutting ties with him: Dark Horse has suspended his series Anansi Boys with just one unpublished issue in limbo, Amazon’s Good Omens shoved him out of the production of its wrap-up movie, and even a musical stage adaptation of Coraline was cancelled in his home country of England.

It’s a real shame. Gaiman had serious talent and his works have inspired millions. But you can’t excuse being a lecherous lout. I did not watch the Sandman show but the biggest loss on my end was the spinoff Dead Boy Detectives, which I did see and enjoy greatly. Netflix has yet to find a place for Sandman Season 2 on its release schedule.
