That scene at the end of 'Lanterns' definitely left me questioning everything! I watched the episode twice before that ending hit me. The way they showed the ring missing from both John and Hal made my stomach drop. I think Lindelof is telling the truth in that interview, he is not the type to fake a death just to bring the person back next episode for shock value. That would feel like a cheap trick after all the buildup. What I liked most is how the mystery from 2016 suddenly feels smaller compared to this new one. Seven weeks is a long wait but I trust this team based on his past work. My only worry is that the alien body swap theory might still happen later as a twist, even if it is not true right now. Either way I am hooked and will keep watching every week.

This reminds me so much of Lost in a good way, the mystery box style writing is clearly his signature move. I am not mad about it though, I actually missed this kind of storytelling on television. Most shows nowadays spell everything out for the audience and leave no room for theories or discussion. Having a group chat argue about who has the ring right now is honestly fun for me. I do think the interview quote is carefully worded on purpose, he wants us guessing until the reveal actually happens on screen.

My theory is different from most comments here, what if John himself is somehow responsible or connected to what happened to Hal? The show clearly wants us to suspect everyone including the people we trust the most right now. Sheriff Kerry being older too tells me time and consequences matter a lot in this story, nothing feels accidental with this writer. I appreciate that the show is not rushing to explain everything immediately and instead lets tension build naturally across episodes. This patient pacing might frustrate some viewers who want quick answers but I personally enjoy shows that respect the audience enough to wait. Seven episodes left means plenty of room for twists nobody has predicted yet, and I am ready for it.

I think the body is real, and honestly I hope it stays that way. Hal Jordan dying would immediately make the murder investigation personal for John instead of just being another Lantern case. The missing ring is the part I keep thinking about. Somebody had to take it, and that person probably knows exactly what happened. I also like the ten-year jump because we get to see that this was not some random event from John's past. It clearly changed his life. If Hal suddenly shows up alive in episode seven, I would probably feel cheated. The writers have already told us that his mortality is important to the season. That does not sound like something they would build up just to undo later.

The alien shapeshifting angle from earlier in the episode makes the fake body theory believable, I do not fully trust this death yet.

People are already arguing this is just another Lost situation and honestly they are not wrong, but is that really such a bad thing? I loved Lost despite its ending, and I trust Lindelof more now than I did back then because he has grown as a writer since. The interview answer he gave feels intentionally vague, like he wants us discussing it for weeks instead of confirming anything outright. That is smart marketing if you ask me, keeps people talking and coming back every single week just to find clues. I just hope the payoff matches the buildup this time around, because mystery box shows only work when the answers feel satisfying instead of disappointing everyone who stayed patient.

My first thought was that it was a fake body too. I mean, the episode literally showed us that aliens can make convincing human-looking bodies. That feels like a clue sitting right in front of us. But after reading Lindelof's comments, I am less sure. He seems pretty serious about Hal's death being part of what defines the season. I still think there could be some trick involved, though. Maybe the body is real but the circumstances are not what we think. That would be more interesting to me than simply saying, “Surprise, Hal is alive.” The missing ring has to matter somehow. I cannot imagine the show making such a big deal about it for no reason. Seven episodes is a long time to keep this mystery going.
