This premise sounds so strange but I am already hooked. A wicker husband coming to life is not something I expected to see in 2026 movie lineup. Olivia Colman can play literally anything and make it feel real, so I trust her with this weird role completely. Peter Dinklage as the basketmaker is a smart choice too, his voice alone gives so much warmth. I like that this is based on a short story because it means the writers actually had solid source material instead of just inventing a random gimmick. The mix of comedy and dark themes about village judgment sounds like it could work really well if the tone is balanced right. October release is far but I am marking my calendar now.

Not gonna lie the trailer quote sounds a bit cheesy but I still want to watch this. Sometimes cheesy works when the story has heart behind it.

I read the original short story years ago and honestly this adaptation sounds respectful to the source. The story was about loneliness and how society punishes women who do not fit the mold, and it looks like the film kept that message. Casting Colman as someone who is mocked for being different is such a good match because she always brings dignity to characters who could easily become jokes. My only concern is whether the humor will overshadow the emotional core, because trailers sometimes oversell the comedy side to attract wider audience. Fantasy elements combined with medieval setting can go wrong easily if the budget is not there, but with these two leads I think the performances will carry it even if visuals are simple.

Historical fantasy romance with dark comedy is such a specific combination that it either becomes a cult classic or completely flops with no middle ground. Given the cast though I am leaning toward cult classic. Colman has never picked a bad project that I remember, and Dinklage always brings dignity to strange characters instead of playing them as jokes. The allegory about village hypocrisy sounds like it has a lot to say about how communities treat people who refuse to follow expected paths, especially women expected to marry regardless of their own wishes. I just hope the ending does not rush the emotional payoff after building such a unique premise, because these types of stories often struggle to land the final act properly.
