Square Repeats Octopath Traveler Mistake With Star Ocean 2 R

It's frustrating to see Square Enix repeat this pattern with the new releases. The path they took with Octopath Traveler felt like a missed opportunity to reward loyal fans who supported the series from the start, and it's disappointing to see the same playbook applied to Star Ocean 2 R. With the rise of digital ownership, you'd hope companies would adapt to more consumer-friendly practices.

I also wonder how this will affect the titles' reception, especially given that Star Ocean 2 is a beloved classic. The remaster could've been a chance to introduce it to a new audience along with acknowledging the existing fanbase. Do you think there are any alternatives they could've considered to make this transition smoother?

I already own the Switch version, so I don't understand why I would pay full price again. If there were new features, extra content, or even better performance, maybe I could think about it. But if it's basically the same game without save transfer, it just feels like paying twice for no reason. I like Star Ocean a lot, but this isn't something I can justify buying.

I don't mind companies releasing upgraded versions for new hardware. What bothers me is when they make existing customers start over. Save transfer should be expected in 2026, especially for an RPG where people spend dozens of hours. I wouldn't even be upset if there was a small paid upgrade. Charging full price again is the part that makes this look unnecessary.

This is becoming a pattern now. First Octopath Traveler and now Star Ocean. It makes me wonder if this is going to happen with more Square Enix games on Switch 2. If that's the plan, I'll just keep buying their games on PC instead. At least I know my library will still be there, and I don't have to worry about buying the same game again because of a new console.
