The Art Of Star Trek: Lower Decks Coming From IDW

I’m really excited about The Art of Star Trek: Lower Decks coming out next week! This show brought such a fresh and humorous take on the Star Trek universe, and the animation style really set it apart from other series. It’s such a shame to hear that Paramount seems to be stepping back from Trek content overall, especially with how well Lower Decks managed to blend comedy and heartfelt stories.

Do you have a favorite episode or character from the show? I loved how they developed the relationships among the crew, particularly the dynamic between Mariner and Boimler!

I’m genuinely going to miss Lower Decks because it managed to be funny without making Star Trek feel meaningless. A lot of parody-style shows eventually start acting embarrassed by the franchise they came from, but Lower Decks still clearly loved Star Trek history. That’s why an art book actually makes sense for this series. The animation style looks simple at first, but there are tons of background details and references packed into almost every episode. I’d honestly like seeing the early concepts for the Cerritos crew because the final designs fit their personalities really well. Boimler especially looks exactly like someone who would panic during every space crisis. The signed edition sounds nice, but $99 is a little painful for me personally. I’d probably stick with the regular version unless the alternate cover ends up looking amazing.

The behind-the-scenes comments are probably the biggest selling point for me. I like hearing artists explain why certain designs changed or why specific choices were made. Those little production stories are usually more interesting than companies expect. Lower Decks also had a very specific challenge because it needed to feel connected to older Trek shows while still looking modern and comedic. That balance could have gone wrong really easily. Personally I think they nailed it most of the time. I’m also glad they included ship and location breakdowns because the Cerritos became weirdly iconic by the end of the show. It started as the “unimportant ship” joke, but people actually got attached to it. That says a lot about how well the series handled its setting and crew over time.
