Moana Live-Action Trailer: A Faithful Remake… With a Very Questionable Maui

Moana looks fine while Maui looks a woman in a muscle suit from an SNL sketch. Disney has officially released the trailer for its live-action Moana, set to arrive in […]

Maui's suit looks super fake. Like they tried to make him match the cartoon exactly but forgot humans don't have inflatable pecs. Catherine seems solid though, she has that determined vibe Moana needs. The water and island shots are gorgeous at least. Still, if the wig keeps moving like that in the movie I'm gonna laugh every time he talks. Hope they fix it before July.

This is exactly what I was afraid of. Disney live-actions are just expensive copies most of the time. Maui looking like a bad cosplay is the cherry on top. The Rock is charismatic but no amount of charm saves that padded costume and dollar-store wig. Catherine Laga'aia looks like she could actually carry it, but why bother remaking it shot for shot if you're not changing anything? Waste of money.

Okay but can we talk about how good the ocean looks? Those waves and the glow actually feel real this time. Moana herself is fine, the girl has presence. But Maui... bro what happened? He looks like someone glued balloons under his shirt and then slapped a Halloween wig on top. It's distracting as hell. I still want to see it because I love the story, but damn they fumbled the demigod look hard.

I'm not even mad, I'm just disappointed. The trailer is basically the animated movie but with real people and CGI water. Cool effects, sure, but Maui's design is a joke. Padded suit + bad wig = zero demigod energy. Catherine is the only part that feels fresh. If they wanted faithful, they should've trusted actors to bring the characters without cartoon prosthetics. This looks lazy.

Lol the article nailed it. Maui really does look like an SNL skit version of himself. The suit puffs out weird every time he moves and that wig is fighting for its life. Rest of the trailer is pretty though. Islands, ocean, music – all hits the same spots. Catherine seems like a good pick too. I'll watch it opening day anyway because nostalgia, but yeah... questionable choices.

I actually think people are overreacting a bit. The suit is exaggerated because Maui is supposed to be larger than life, right? Cartoon Maui isn't realistic either. Catherine looks perfect for the role, very natural and strong. The trailer has great energy and the effects are next level. Sure the wig could be better, but I'm not letting that ruin the whole movie for me. July can't come soon enough.

This is why live-action remakes keep failing to impress. They copy everything including the impossible body shapes. Maui's proportions worked in animation because it's drawn that way. In real life it just looks ridiculous with padding and fake hair. The story is still great and the visuals are stunning, but that one character choice pulls me out every time. Catherine deserves better than this distraction.
