Yet another iconic DC character has been announced as getting their own book next spring. Hot on the heels of the Zatanna and Firestorm announcements, it’s now been revealed they’ll be joined by a third book, a four-issue miniseries focused on Superman’s longstanding doppelganger who does and says the opposite of anything…Bizarro. The plot is that Jimmy Olsen and Perry White enter Bizarro World, where they encounter the Bizarro Daily Planet. Upon exploring this new world, they make it their mission to track down who’s behind it. “Their journey leads them to a dimension that mirrors Metropolis in uncanny ways and reveres its legendary newspaper as an article of faith,” explains DC. “As they unravel the mystery of this bizarre world, they confront the being behind it all. Is he a misguided Superman fan, an agent of pure chaos, or is he no one at all?” Written by Kevin Smith and Eric Carrasco, the mini promises to explain the “origin” of Bizarro, which of course has been told in numerous ways countless times. You can consider this one Smith’s version of the story….how Bizarro came to be in the Viewaskewniverse. Bizarro himself was asked to give a quote for the […]

I am tired of origin stories, honestly. Bizarro already has too many versions, and none of them stay important for long. Every time DC says they will explain him again, it feels like a reset button. That said, using the Daily Planet angle is at least different. I like Perry White getting more page time. He is usually just background noise. Kevin Smith writing Bizarro jokes worries me, because it can easily turn into self jokes instead of story. I do not hate humor, I just want balance. The press quote from Bizarro feels very on the nose, but I guess that is the point. I probably will not preorder, but if people say it is more thoughtful than silly, I might read it later. Four issues is short enough that it will not overstay.

Oh , I am actually excited for this and I do not care if that makes me basic. Bizarro is one of those characters who works better in small doses, so a four issue mini makes sense. Jimmy Olsen stories are usually fun, and pairing him with Perry White feels old school in a good way. I grew up reading comics where reporters mattered. The idea that a newspaper is treated like a holy object in another world is interesting to me. That feels very comic book but also very DC. Kevin Smith has written stuff I like and stuff I ignore, so I am going in neutral. I am not expecting a perfect answer to who Bizarro is. I just want a story that feels like it understands why he exists. If it does that, I will be happy.

What stands out to me is Perry White being part of the main plot. That almost never happens, and I respect that choice. Comics focus too much on heroes and forget the people who live in the city. Bizarro World being obsessed with the Daily Planet feels clever, not just weird. I do not mind another origin if it is framed through normal characters reacting to it. Kevin Smith writing DC again feels nostalgic to me. I remember his earlier work, and it had heart even when it was messy. I am not expecting something deep, just something that feels honest. The April to July schedule is also nice. No long delays. I will probably pick up issue one and decide from there.

I laughed at the Bizarro quote, but I hope that is not the whole tone. I want strange, not loud. Bizarro works best when he is uncomfortable to read, not just funny. The mystery angle sounds fine, but I do not want it solved in a simple way. Saying he is chaos or a fan feels too easy. I want something awkward and unresolved. Four issues might be too short for that, but maybe that is the challenge. Eric Carrasco being co writer gives me some hope, since he usually brings structure. I am cautious but open. If the art carries strong mood, that will help a lot. I will check previews before buying.

Not everything needs to change the universe. Sometimes a weird side story is fine. Bizarro is literally built for weird side stories. Jimmy Olsen traveling dimensions feels very Silver Age, and I like that energy. Comics should sometimes feel playful. Kevin Smith gets judged too harshly in my opinion. He is not perfect, but he clearly loves comics. I would rather read something made with love than something cold and safe. I am picking this up day one. Worst case, I spent money on four issues and move on.

This feels like DC filling space between bigger books. That is not always bad, but it shows. Bizarro is a safe choice because people recognize the name. I do not see much risk here. The plot description sounds fine but also very controlled. I do not expect big swings. Kevin Smith explaining Bizarro again feels more like branding than necessity. I will probably wait for the trade if reviews are decent. Monthly singles are too expensive now. The variant covers look like they are doing a lot of the work selling this. That tells me enough.

Comics forget that Superman is tied to media, not just punching. A world that worships a newspaper is funny but also kind of sharp. It reflects how stories shape reality. If the book leans into that idea, it could be smarter than people expect. I do not need a clean origin. I like messy explanations. Bizarro being no one at all is the most interesting option to me. I hope they do not back away from that. I will give it a chance, even if Kevin Smith can be uneven. Sometimes uneven is better than boring.

I do not feel strongly either way, which is probably the point. This looks like a light read for a few months. Not everything has to be important. Bizarro has always been a concept more than a character, so I am fine with another take. I like that it ends in July and does not drag. The art teams listed are solid, so at least it will look good. I am not expecting this to become my favorite book, but I might enjoy it on a quiet night. Sometimes that is enough.
