A squirrel with a gun might be dangerous, but what about the many other animals in the world. Squirrel with a Gun has a new free update dropping on all platforms! Last year, Squirrel with a Gun would drop and would garner attentions thanks to its ridiculous premise. Taking control of a squirrel experimented on with enhanced intelligence, you take up a gun and begin exploring. It’s a goofy time with a unique gunplay system that doesn’t take itself seriously and focuses on a wacky fun time. After releasing, the game would gain a variety of free updates improving and expanding upon the original experience. This would include updates like the Ratatoskr update which included a new boss, and the Gravity Gun update adding a unique new weapon to mess around with. These updates improved the game with extra content, with this next update adding onto the fun. SQUIRRELS, POSSUMS, AND RACCOONS, OH MY! I downloaded the new update yesterday and spent a few hours just running around as a raccoon. I honestly did not expect to enjoy a squirrel game this much, but the variety of animals is really fun. Each animal feels slightly different in movement and handling the gun, which adds a layer of strategy I didn’t think would exist. I also like that the new challenges aren’t just about shooting; you actually have to explore and plan how to get through bunkers. The Red-Light-Green-Light game was surprisingly tense, even though it’s meant to be silly. I’m looking forward to seeing what other animals they add in future updates.

I tried Squirrel with a Gun when it first came out and thought it was just a joke game. After this new update, I realized there is actually a lot of care in how they design the world. The trash monsters add some real challenge, and getting golden acorns feels satisfying. I’m not really into switching animals for cosmetic reasons, but I can see why people like it. I also like that New Game Plus lets me start with everything I unlocked before. It’s nice that I can replay favorite areas without grinding again.

Many games would lock these features behind paywalls, but the cosmetic changes and new challenges feel like a gift. Playing as different animals actually changes gameplay in subtle ways, and that is exciting. I especially enjoyed climbing the giant stone squirrel statue—felt like a real accomplishment. The developers clearly want players to experiment and enjoy themselves, and it works for me.
