M3GAN Spinoff ‘Soulm8te” Canned By Universal Three Weeks Before Release

:Last year, before the release of M3GAN 2.0, Universal Studios announced a spinoff of sorts was on the way, an “erotic thriller” called Soulm8te. Despite sounding like it had little to do with either M3GAN film at all, the globe just got cold feet at the eleventh hour. It was supposed to be released January 9, but has now been pulled from the schedule indefinitely. Soulm8te is about a man whose wife dies and, rather than accepting the loss, he creates an android replacement of her. Does it go wrong? You bet it does. “In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate,” the official description says. Kate Dolan, the director of Soulm8te, said her movie was “an exploration of relationships and loneliness…Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.” Hope she wasn’t looking forward to it TOO much. This doesn’t mean Soulm8te will never see the light of day; it means Universal no longer has an interest in releasing it themselves. They say they’re now shopping the movie around to other companies. Where it will wind […]

Megan 2.0 flopping is probably the reason why this movie got cancelled. It has so much potential as a franchise, but they made a mistake of releasing Megan 2.0 as a summer movie. It should have been released on Halloween, instead of trying to compete against box office giants like F1. And the Marvel and DC movies.

Well, it's not a loss because, in a way, we kind of seen this movie before. Megan Fox already did Subservience. And there are already erotic thrillers about androids before. So it's not a big loss. Although, it can be said that M3gan, as a franchise, failed.

I feel disappointed more than anything. M3GAN 2.0 was not a huge success, sure, but it tried to expand the story instead of rehashing the first movie. Soulm8te could have been another step into unique territory. I think studios underestimate audiences sometimes. People are interested in new ideas if they are presented well. The premise is dark and unusual, and that’s exactly what makes me curious. It’s a shame it’s being shelved indefinitely, but maybe there’s hope for it elsewhere.

I really think M3GAN 2.0 could have done much better if they released it during Halloween season instead of summer. Summer is packed with big action movies and franchises, so a horror sequel was always going to struggle there. Halloween is when casual viewers are actually looking for scary movies, even if they are not hardcore horror fans. The timing alone hurt its chances.

What made it worse is that they also changed the genre. The first movie worked because it balanced horror, dark humor, and social commentary. The sequel leaned more into action and sci-fi, and that shift confused people. It felt like they were trying to do a Terminator 2 move, where the sequel goes bigger and more action-focused. The problem is that M3GAN does not have the same foundation or character setup to support that kind of jump.

I don’t think the idea itself was bad, but the execution and release strategy were off. If they kept the horror tone and released it around October, the conversation would probably be very different. Instead, it felt like they rushed to redefine the franchise before it was ready.

I was really curious about Soulm8te when I first heard about it, mostly because the concept sounded unusual. The idea of an android built to replace a lost spouse going wrong is kind of chilling, and it could have explored grief in a really different way than most horror or thriller movies. I get why Universal might have gotten cold feet, though. Marketing something that blends erotic themes with horror can be tricky, and if no one saw early promotion, they might have worried about reception. Still, I hope another studio picks it up because it seems like the story had potential to be more than just a horror flick—it could have been a psychological look at human loneliness and attachment, and those kinds of stories stick with you.

I can’t say I’m shocked about this cancellation. Universal probably saw the mixed reception of M3GAN 2.0 and decided to be cautious. The first M3GAN did so well, and studios often want to protect the brand. A spinoff that’s a different genre entirely is always a gamble. I do wish they had pushed it forward anyway, because the story idea seems compelling. A man rebuilding his wife as a sentient android could make for a unique emotional thriller, especially if it shows how people deal with loss. But I guess big studios rarely want to take risks that might alienate audiences or attract controversy.

I think the cancellation of Soulm8te says a lot about how studios think about risk. They see M3GAN 2.0 underperforming and immediately become cautious, even if the story has merit. It’s frustrating because sometimes movies that don’t follow the original formula can end up being more memorable. Soulm8te could have explored emotional and ethical questions about AI and human relationships, which is rare for a thriller. I hope it finds a home somewhere else because it deserves a chance to reach audiences who are open to unconventional stories.
