The Original Cut OF Star Wars Comes Back To Theaters In 2027

Looks like the rumors were correct. A few months ago Lucasfilm announced they would be re-releasing Star Wars: A New Hope theatrically as part of the celebration of the film turning 50. They didn’t say WHICH version, and fans hoped they meant the original untouched 1977 cut. Surprisingly, they did. Guess ol’ George’s thumb is no longer on the scale. In 1997, for the 20th anniversary, Lucas infamously went back to A New Hope and added extra scenes, enhanced existing ones with CG monsters, and delayed Han’s trigger finger. While he was at it he edited the other two films as well. While the gamble initially paid off, reigniting interest in Star Wars after years of cultural dormancy, the remakes were ultimately reviled, for the chief reason that George wouldn’t let anyone see the originals anymore. GL continued to re-edit the Original Trilogy for as long as he held the exclusive rights. He made Vader say “NoOOooOoOoOoO” in Return of the Jedi and inserted “Maclunkey” into A New Hope. He briefly allowed the untouched versions on DVD, but as a cheap transfer of the Laserdisc version that was non-anamorphic (meaning it appeared as a little square on HD televisions). Fortunately, […]

I honestly cannot believe this version is finally getting restored. For so many years, people kept saying the real 1977 cut was basically lost media. Every time the franchise released something, we always ended up with the version filled with heavy CGI and updated effects. I got used to thinking the untouched original was something we would only see in low-quality fan uploads or old bootleg recordings. Seeing an official announcement that confirms the restored theatrical cut is coming back feels unreal. I always thought Lucasfilm would avoid doing this because it goes against the direction George Lucas preferred. So the fact that they changed course makes this release feel historic. I am curious how much of the restoration they did and whether they kept the grain and texture from the actual film stock. I just want to watch something that feels honest to the time it came from. I also want to see how different the tone is without the CG additions. It is strange to think we are getting something many fans believed would never see the light of day again. This is the kind of movie experience I want to catch in a theater without hesitation.

When I was a kid, my uncle used to talk about seeing Star Wars during its original run. He always said the atmosphere felt electric. For me, I only saw the Special Editions, and even though I enjoyed them, I never fully related to the nostalgia people described. Hearing that the 1977 cut is returning almost feels like I get to visit a moment I missed. I know it will not be exactly the same, because we live in a different era, but at least the movie will match the version people saw back then. I am also interested in the fact that the opening crawl does not contain “A New Hope.” It changes the tone slightly, and I want to see how that feels. I also hope this release encourages more major studios to bring back original versions of their classics. Too many old cuts are stuck in vaults. I am glad Lucasfilm finally made a move that respects fans who care about the roots of the franchise. This is one of the few times I feel a company decision is simply good for everyone.

As someone who watched Star Wars for the first time in the early 2000s, I have always heard people argue about which version is “correct.” I never had strong feelings about the changes, but I always wondered why the original cut was so hard to find legally. It felt strange that such an important film in movie history was locked away. When I saw the news about the 2027 release, I actually felt relieved. It means the company finally understands that historical preservation matters. I like the idea of watching the movie in a theater where everyone is focused and there are no distractions.
