Looks like the rumors were correct. A few months ago Lucasfilm announced they would be re-releasing Star Wars: A New Hope theatrically as part of the celebration of the film turning 50. They didn’t say WHICH version, and fans hoped they meant the original untouched 1977 cut. Surprisingly, they did. Guess ol’ George’s thumb is no longer on the scale. In 1997, for the 20th anniversary, Lucas infamously went back to A New Hope and added extra scenes, enhanced existing ones with CG monsters, and delayed Han’s trigger finger. While he was at it he edited the other two films as well. While the gamble initially paid off, reigniting interest in Star Wars after years of cultural dormancy, the remakes were ultimately reviled, for the chief reason that George wouldn’t let anyone see the originals anymore. GL continued to re-edit the Original Trilogy for as long as he held the exclusive rights. He made Vader say “NoOOooOoOoOoO” in Return of the Jedi and inserted “Maclunkey” into A New Hope. He briefly allowed the untouched versions on DVD, but as a cheap transfer of the Laserdisc version that was non-anamorphic (meaning it appeared as a little square on HD televisions). Fortunately, […]
